Old Testament Teachings

The Old Testament contains numerous admonitions against the oppression of the poor. In the Law of Moses, God commands His people to act justly and to care for the needy. Leviticus 19:13 states, "You must not defraud your neighbor or rob him. You must not withhold until morning the wages due a hired hand." This command underscores the importance of fair treatment and timely payment, reflecting God's justice.

Proverbs, a book of wisdom, frequently addresses the treatment of the poor. Proverbs 14:31 declares, "Whoever oppresses the poor taunts their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors Him." This verse highlights the connection between how one treats the poor and their relationship with God. Oppressing the poor is seen as an affront to God Himself.

In Isaiah 10:1-2 , the prophet warns, "Woe to those who enact unjust statutes and issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of justice and withhold the rights of the oppressed of My people, to make widows their prey and rob the fatherless." James, the brother of Jesus, also addresses the issue of oppressing the poor. In James 2:6-7 , he writes, "But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you and drag you into court? Are they not the ones who blaspheme the noble name by which you have been called?"
