Divisions are Proof of a Carnal Spirit

In the context of Christian theology, divisions within the church or among believers are often seen as evidence of a carnal, or fleshly, spirit. This perspective is rooted in the teachings of the Apostle Paul, who addressed the issue of divisions in several of his epistles. The presence of divisions is indicative of a departure from spiritual maturity and unity in Christ, reflecting a reliance on human wisdom and desires rather than the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Biblical Foundation

The Apostle Paul addresses the issue of divisions explicitly in his first letter to the Corinthians. In 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 , Paul writes, "Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual, but as worldly—as infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for solid food. In fact, you are still not ready, for you are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and dissension among you, are you not worldly? Are you not walking in the way of man?" Here, Paul equates divisions and jealousy with worldliness, or carnality, suggesting that such behavior is characteristic of spiritual immaturity.

Characteristics of a Carnal Spirit

A carnal spirit is marked by behaviors and attitudes that are contrary to the fruit of the Spirit as outlined in Galatians 5:22-23. Instead of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, a carnal spirit manifests in jealousy, strife, and factions. These traits are symptomatic of a life not fully surrendered to the Holy Spirit, resulting in discord and division within the body of Christ.

Consequences of Divisions

Divisions within the church can have severe consequences, undermining the witness of the church and hindering its mission. Jesus emphasized the importance of unity among His followers in John 17:21 , praying "that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me." Disunity contradicts this prayer for oneness and can lead to a weakened testimony to the world.

Paul's Exhortation to Unity

Paul consistently exhorts believers to pursue unity and peace. In Ephesians 4:3 , he urges the church to "make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." This call to unity is not merely a suggestion but a command that reflects the heart of God for His people. Unity is a testament to the transformative power of the gospel and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

Overcoming a Carnal Spirit

Overcoming a carnal spirit requires a conscious effort to live by the Spirit, as Paul instructs in Galatians 5:16 : "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." This involves a daily commitment to spiritual disciplines such as prayer, study of the Scriptures, and fellowship with other believers. By cultivating a life led by the Spirit, believers can overcome the tendencies of the flesh and foster unity within the church.

Conclusion

While divisions are a natural consequence of human nature, they are not reflective of the new nature given to believers in Christ. The call to unity is a call to spiritual maturity, requiring believers to set aside personal preferences and pride for the sake of the gospel. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the church can overcome divisions and demonstrate the love and unity that are hallmarks of a life transformed by Christ.
