The term "commonly" is not frequently used in the Bible, but the concept it represents—something that is usual, habitual, or generally accepted—can be found throughout Scripture. In biblical contexts, the idea of what is "common" often relates to practices, beliefs, or behaviors that are widespread among people, whether they are righteous or sinful.

Common Practices and Beliefs

In the Bible, certain practices and beliefs are described as common among the people of Israel and the surrounding nations. For example, idolatry was a common practice among the nations surrounding Israel, and the Israelites were repeatedly warned against adopting these practices. In 2 Kings 17:15 , it is written, "They rejected His statutes and His covenant He had made with their fathers and the testimonies He had testified against them. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless, going after the surrounding nations the LORD had commanded them not to imitate."

Common Sins

The Bible often addresses sins that are common among humanity. Romans 3:23 states, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." This verse highlights the universality of sin, indicating that it is a common condition affecting all people. The commonality of sin underscores the need for redemption through Jesus Christ.

Common Grace

The concept of "common grace" refers to the grace of God that is given to all people, regardless of their faith. This includes the blessings of life, provision, and the restraint of sin. Matthew 5:45 illustrates this idea: "He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." This verse shows that God's grace is commonly extended to all humanity, providing for their needs and sustaining the world.

Common Faith

The New Testament speaks of a "common faith" shared among believers. In Titus 1:4 , Paul writes, "To Titus, my true child in our common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior." This common faith unites believers in their shared belief in Jesus Christ and the salvation He offers.

Common Good

The Bible encourages believers to seek the common good, promoting unity and edification within the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:7 states, "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." This verse emphasizes that spiritual gifts are given to believers not for personal gain, but for the benefit of the entire community of faith.

Common Meals

In the early church, sharing meals was a common practice that fostered fellowship and unity among believers. Acts 2:46 describes this practice: "With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart." These common meals were a reflection of the communal life and love that characterized the early Christian community.

Common Salvation

Jude 1:3 refers to the "common salvation" shared by all believers: "Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt it necessary to write and urge you to contend earnestly for the faith entrusted once for all to the saints." This common salvation is the shared experience of redemption and eternal life through Jesus Christ, which is the foundation of Christian unity and fellowship.
