Industry: Requisite to Supply: Wants of Others

Industry, in the biblical context, is often associated with diligence, hard work, and the ethical responsibility to meet the needs of others. The Scriptures provide numerous insights into the importance of industriousness as a means to fulfill the wants and needs of the community, reflecting a divine mandate for stewardship and service.

Biblical Foundations of Industry

The Bible consistently emphasizes the virtue of hard work and the necessity of industry. In Proverbs 6:6-8 , the industrious nature of the ant is highlighted as an example for humanity: "Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways and be wise. Without a commander, without an overseer or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food at harvest." This passage underscores the importance of self-motivation and preparation, qualities essential for meeting the needs of others.

Industry as a Means of Provision

The apostle Paul, in his letters, frequently addresses the role of work in providing for oneself and others. In 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 , Paul admonishes, "For even while we were with you, we gave you this command: If anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not eat. Yet we hear that some of you are leading undisciplined lives and accomplishing nothing. We command and urge such people by our Lord Jesus Christ to begin working quietly to earn their own living." Here, Paul links industry with the ability to sustain oneself and contribute to the community, highlighting the moral obligation to work diligently.

Industry and Generosity

The fruits of industry are not solely for personal gain but are intended to be shared with others. Ephesians 4:28 states, "He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need." This verse illustrates the transformation from idleness or wrongdoing to productive labor, with the ultimate goal of generosity and support for those in need.

The Parable of the Talents

Jesus' Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) further reinforces the principle of industriousness. In this parable, servants are entrusted with their master's wealth, and their industriousness in multiplying these resources is rewarded. The servant who fails to act industriously is reprimanded, demonstrating the expectation that one's abilities and resources should be actively employed for growth and service.

Industry and Community Welfare

The early church exemplified the communal aspect of industry. Acts 2:44-45 describes the believers' practice of sharing resources: "All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they shared with anyone who was in need." This passage reflects the collective responsibility to ensure that the needs of the community are met through the industrious efforts of its members.

Conclusion

The biblical perspective on industry is deeply intertwined with the call to serve others. Through diligent work, individuals are equipped to provide for themselves and contribute to the welfare of their communities, fulfilling a divine mandate to love and support one another.
