Prayer: should be offered Up with Importunity

Prayer, as a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, is not only a means of communication with God but also an expression of dependence, trust, and devotion. The concept of importunity in prayer emphasizes persistence and perseverance, urging believers to continue in prayer with unwavering faith and determination.

The Bible provides several examples and teachings that highlight the importance of importunity in prayer. One of the most notable passages is found in the Gospel of Luke, where Jesus shares the Parable of the Persistent Widow. In Luke 18:1-8 , Jesus tells of a widow who persistently pleads with an unjust judge to grant her justice against her adversary. Despite the judge's initial reluctance, he eventually grants her request due to her persistence. Jesus concludes the parable by saying, "And will not God bring about justice for His chosen ones, who cry out to Him day and night? Will He keep putting them off?" (Luke 18:7). This parable underscores the necessity of persistent prayer and assures believers of God's readiness to respond to their earnest petitions.

Another significant teaching on importunity in prayer is found in Luke 11:5-13 , where Jesus presents the Parable of the Friend at Midnight. In this account, a man goes to his friend's house at midnight to ask for bread to feed an unexpected guest. Although the friend is initially reluctant to help due to the late hour, he eventually gives in because of the man's persistence. Jesus uses this parable to encourage His followers to be bold and persistent in their prayers, stating, "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you" (Luke 11:9).

The Apostle Paul also emphasizes the importance of perseverance in prayer. In his letter to the Thessalonians, he exhorts them to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17), highlighting the need for continuous and persistent prayer in the life of a believer. Similarly, in Ephesians 6:18 , Paul instructs the church to "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints."

The Old Testament also provides examples of importunity in prayer. The account of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1 illustrates a woman who persistently prayed for a child despite her barrenness. Her fervent prayers and vows to the Lord were eventually answered, and she gave birth to Samuel, who would become a significant prophet in Israel.

Importunity in prayer is not about wearing down a reluctant God but rather about demonstrating faith, dependence, and a sincere heart. It reflects a deep trust in God's character and His promises, as well as a recognition of one's own need for divine intervention. Through persistent prayer, believers align themselves with God's will and open their hearts to His transformative power.
