Profane Swearing: The Wicked: Clothe Themselves With

Profane swearing, or the irreverent use of God's name and sacred things, is a sin that Scripture consistently condemns. It is a manifestation of a heart that does not revere God, and it is often associated with the wicked, who are described as clothing themselves with such behavior.

The Bible warns against the misuse of God's name in the Ten Commandments: "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain" (Exodus 20:7). This commandment underscores the seriousness with which God views the sanctity of His name and the words that proceed from our mouths.

The wicked, in their rebellion against God, often engage in profane swearing as a reflection of their inner corruption. Psalm 10:7 describes the wicked in this way: "His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence; trouble and malice are under his tongue" . This verse highlights how the wicked are characterized by their speech, which is filled with cursing and deceit, revealing the state of their hearts.

In the New Testament, Jesus teaches that our words are a reflection of our hearts: "For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). This principle is evident in the behavior of the wicked, who, by their profane swearing, demonstrate their lack of reverence for God and His holiness.

The Apostle Paul also addresses the issue of corrupt speech in his letters. In Ephesians 4:29, he exhorts believers: "Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen" . This instruction contrasts the speech of the righteous with that of the wicked, who indulge in unwholesome and profane language.

James, the brother of Jesus, further emphasizes the importance of controlling one's tongue: "Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be!" (James 3:10). The inconsistency of blessing God while cursing others is a mark of the wicked, who fail to honor God with their speech.

The wicked, by clothing themselves with profane swearing, reveal their disregard for God's commandments and their separation from His righteousness. Their speech is a testament to their rebellion and serves as a warning to those who seek to live in accordance with God's will.

Psalm 109:18
As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.
