Value and Esteem

In the biblical context, the concepts of value and esteem are deeply rooted in the understanding of human worth as created in the image of God, as well as the honor and respect due to God and others. These themes are woven throughout Scripture, providing guidance on how believers are to view themselves, others, and their relationship with God.

Human Value and Dignity

The Bible begins with the affirmation of human value in Genesis 1:27, where it states, "So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." This foundational truth establishes the inherent worth of every individual, as each person reflects the image of the Creator. This intrinsic value is not based on human achievements or status but on God's creative act.

Psalm 139:13-14 further emphasizes this by declaring, "For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Here, the psalmist acknowledges the intimate involvement of God in the creation of each person, underscoring the preciousness of human life.

Esteem for Others

The Bible calls believers to esteem others highly, reflecting the love and humility of Christ. Philippians 2:3-4 instructs, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." This passage highlights the importance of valuing others above oneself, fostering a community of mutual respect and care.

Romans 12:10 echoes this sentiment: "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another." The call to honor others is a reflection of the love that believers are to have for one another, rooted in the love of Christ.

Esteem for God

The ultimate esteem is due to God, who is worthy of all honor and glory. Revelation 4:11 proclaims, "Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created." This acknowledgment of God's supreme worth is central to worship and the believer's relationship with Him.

Proverbs 3:9-10 advises, "Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your harvest; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine." Esteeming God involves recognizing His sovereignty and provision, and responding with gratitude and obedience.

Value in the Community of Believers

The New Testament church is depicted as a body where each member is valued and esteemed for their unique contributions. 1 Corinthians 12:25-26 states, "so that there should be no division in the body, but that its members should have mutual concern for one another. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it." This metaphor of the body illustrates the interconnectedness and mutual esteem that should characterize the Christian community.

Conclusion

The biblical teachings on value and esteem challenge believers to recognize the inherent worth of every individual, to honor others above themselves, and to give God the glory due His name. These principles are foundational to living a life that reflects the character of Christ and fosters a community of love and respect.
