These were the descendants of Aaron:
Aaron, the brother of Moses, was the first high priest of Israel, appointed by God. His descendants were given the responsibility of the priesthood, serving in the tabernacle and later in the temple. This lineage is significant as it establishes the hereditary priesthood, which was central to Israelite worship and religious life. The priesthood was a type of Christ, who is our High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek, as described in Hebrews 7.

Eleazar his son,
Eleazar succeeded Aaron as high priest after Aaron's death. He played a crucial role during the Israelites' journey in the wilderness and the conquest of Canaan. Eleazar's leadership is noted in the distribution of the land among the tribes of Israel (Joshua 14:1). His name means "God has helped," reflecting the divine assistance given to the priestly line. Eleazar's role as high priest prefigures Christ's intercessory work for believers.

Phinehas his son,
Phinehas is known for his zealous action in Numbers 25, where he stopped a plague among the Israelites by executing an Israelite man and a Midianite woman who were defying God's commands. This act of zeal earned him a covenant of peace and a perpetual priesthood (Numbers 25:10-13). Phinehas' actions highlight the importance of holiness and obedience to God, themes that are echoed in the New Testament call to live a life set apart for God.

Abishua his son,
Abishua is a less prominent figure in the biblical narrative, but his inclusion in the genealogy underscores the continuity of the priestly line. His name means "my father is salvation," which can be seen as a foreshadowing of the ultimate salvation brought through Jesus Christ. The genealogical record serves to authenticate the legitimacy of the priesthood and its divine appointment, pointing forward to the eternal priesthood of Christ.

What Does 1 Chronicles 6:50 Mean
Eleazar his son

“Eleazar his son” (1 Chronicles 6:50).

• After God judged Nadab and Abihu (Leviticus 10:1-2), Eleazar became the eldest surviving son of Aaron and was appointed to oversee “all the tabernacle and everything that belonged to it” (Numbers 3:32).

• His life shows that God’s calling on a family does not end when one generation fails; the Lord faithfully preserves His purposes. See also Numbers 20:25-28 where Eleazar receives the high-priestly garments from Aaron just before Aaron’s death, a tangible hand-off of sacred responsibility.

Joshua 24:33 notes Eleazar’s burial in the hill country of Ephraim, underscoring that the priestly line was physically rooted in the land the Lord had given.

Takeaway: Eleazar embodies steady obedience in contrast to his brothers’ disobedience, reminding us that God expects each generation to walk faithfully, regardless of the past.

Phinehas his son

“Phinehas his son” (1 Chronicles 6:50).

• Phinehas is remembered for zeal that “turned My wrath away from the Israelites” when he confronted blatant sin in the camp (Numbers 25:6-13).

• Because of that courageous act, God promised him “a covenant of a perpetual priesthood” (Numbers 25:13), confirming that bold righteousness safeguards the continuity of ministry.

Psalm 106:30-31 later celebrates Phinehas: “Phinehas intervened, and the plague was restrained. It was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations.”

Judges 20:27-28 shows Phinehas still ministering before the ark during a national crisis, reflecting longevity in service.

Takeaway: Phinehas models holy zeal that protects God’s people and advances His covenant promises.

Abishua his son

“Abishua his son” (1 Chronicles 6:50).

• Abishua receives less narrative space, yet the chronicler names him to prove the unbroken succession from Sinai to the monarchy. Earlier in the chapter his place is repeated (1 Chronicles 6:4-5), emphasizing reliability in record-keeping.

Ezra 7:1-5 later traces Ezra’s ancestry through Abishua, demonstrating that this link matters centuries later when God revives worship after exile.

• Even without dramatic exploits, Abishua represents faithful stewardship in ordinary times, keeping the lineage intact until more prominent figures like Zadok emerge (1 Chronicles 6:8).

Takeaway: Ordinary obedience—names faithfully preserved—matters to God as much as headline-grabbing moments.

summary

1 Chronicles 6:50 affirms the precise, God-ordained succession of Aaron’s line: Eleazar’s steady leadership, Phinehas’s fiery zeal, and Abishua’s quiet custodianship. Together they illustrate that God safeguards His purposes through obedient individuals in every generation, whether their faithfulness is dramatic or unseen.

(50-53) If the chronicler, and not his source, be held responsible for this repetition of the Aaronite line, we may regard it as an instance of his inartificial method of making a new start. He is about to pass from the Levitical genealogies to their cities and domains, and he first partially recapitulates the line of Aaron's sons, because their seats are to be described first. (Comp. 1Chronicles 6:1-2 with 16, 18.) He stops at Ahimaaz, who lived in the age of David and Solomon, because, apparently, the preceding section was mainly concerned with the Levites of that epoch.

Verse 50. - Eleazar. The third son of Aaron (by Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, and descended from Judah through Pharez) is the sea whose descendants are given here, inasmuch as he was appointed chief of the Levites (Numbers 3:32); ministered as a priest with his brother Ithamar, even before the death of Aaron; and succeeded him as high priest (Numbers 20:28). It was in Eleazar's family that the high priesthood remained (as above) till the time of Eli, who was descended from Ithamar, and it returned again to the line of Eleazar in Zadok, fulfilling the intimation of 1 Samuel 2:30.
