Obedience and Discipline
(Deuteronomy 4:1–14)

1And you shall love YHWH your God, and keep His charge, and His statutes, and His ordinances, and His commandments, all the days.

2And know today that it is not your⁺ children who have known, and who have seen the discipline of YHWH your⁺ God, His greatness, and His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm, 3and His signs and His acts that He did in the midst of Egypt to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to all his land, 4and what He did to the army of Egypt, to their horses, and their chariots—how the waters of the Red Sea He caused to flow upon them as they pursued you⁺, and how YHWH has destroyed them to this day, 5and what He did for you⁺ in the wilderness until you⁺ came to this place, 6and what He did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, son of Reuben—how the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their houses and their tents and every living thing that was was at their feet, in the midst of all Israel.

7But your⁺ eyes have seen every great act of YHWH that He did.

God’s Great Blessings
(Joshua 1:1–9)

8And you⁺ shall keep every commandment that I command you today, that you⁺ may be strong and go in and possess the land, which you⁺ are passing over to possess it, 9and so that you⁺ may prolong your days in the land that YHWH swore to your⁺ fathers to give to them and to their seed, a land flowing with milk and honey.

10For the land that you are going in to possess, it is not like the land of Egypt, where you⁺ have come from, where you sowed your seed and watered it by foot as for a garden of herbs. 11And the land that you⁺ are passing over to possess is a land of hills and valleys—from the rain of the heavens it drinks water— 12a land for which YHWH your God cares; the eyes of YHWH your God are always on it from the beginning of the year and to the very end of the year.

13And it shall come to pass, if you⁺ listen carefully to My commandments that I am commanding you⁺ today, to love YHWH your⁺ God, and to serve Him with all your⁺ heart and with all your⁺ soul, 14then I will give the rain for your⁺ land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain and your new wine and your oil. 15and I will give grass in your fields for your livestock, that you may eat and be satisfied.

16Take heed to yourselves, lest your⁺ heart be deceived and you⁺ turn aside and serve other gods and worship them, 17and the anger of YHWH be kindled against you⁺ and He shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, and the land not yield produce, and you⁺ perish quickly from the good land that YHWH is giving to you⁺.

Remember God’s Words

18And you⁺ shall place these words of mine in your⁺ heart and in your⁺ soul, and bind them as a sign on your⁺ hands, and they shall be as frontlets between your⁺ eyes. 19And you⁺ shall teach them to your⁺ children, speaking of them in your sitting in your house, and in your walking in the way, and in your lying down, and in your rising up. 20And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21that your⁺ days may be multiplied—and the days of your⁺ children—in the land that YHWH swore to your⁺ fathers to give to them, as the days of the heavens are above the earth.

22For if you⁺ carefully keep all this command that I am commanding you⁺ to do, to love YHWH your⁺ God, to walk in all His ways, and to hold fast to Him, 23then YHWH will drive out all these nations from before you⁺, and you⁺ will dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves. 24Every place where the sole of your⁺ foot treads in it shall be yours⁺, from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the River Euphrates, and to the Western Sea, shall be your⁺ territory. 25No man shall be able to stand against you⁺. The terror of you⁺ and the fear of you⁺ YHWH your⁺ God will put upon the face of all the land where you⁺ tread in it, as He has said to you⁺.

A Blessing and a Curse

26See, I set before you⁺ today a blessing and a curse— 27the blessing, if you⁺ listen to the commandments of YHWH your⁺ God that I command you⁺ today, 28and the curse, if you⁺ do not listen to the commandments of YHWH your⁺ God and turn aside from the way that I command you⁺ today, to go after other gods that you⁺ have not known.

29And it shall come to pass, when YHWH your God has brought you into the land that you are going in to possess, that you shall put the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. 30Are they not on the other side of the Jordan, toward the way of the going in of the sun, in the land of the Canaanite dwelling in the plain opposite Gilgal beside the Oak of Moreh?

31For you⁺ are passing over the Jordan to go in to possess the land that YHWH your⁺ God is giving to you⁺, and you⁺ will possess it and dwell in it. 32And you⁺ shall be careful to observe all the statutes and ordinances that I set before you⁺ today.
