Good News Translation
He built fortifications for the cities of Judah during this time, and for several years there was no war, because the LORD gave him peace.

He built fortified cities in Judah while the land had rest. He had no war in those years, for the LORD gave him peace.

The LORD blessed Judah with peace while Asa was king, and so during that time, Asa fortified many of the towns.
