1 Timothy 3

1Faithful is the word: If anyone aspires (stretch forth, reach after, yearn for, desire to attain) to overseership (greek-episkopes-to scope/look intently upon, latin-episcopatum-bishopic), he is desirous of a good (kalou) work. 2Therefore, it is necessary that the overseer be without reproach (not found wrong when censured or attacked, not apprehended/arrested, not open to censure-latin-inreprehensibilem-blamed-root unrebukable/blameless), the husband of one wife, sober (clear-minded, free from negative influences/intoxicants, latin-sobrium), sound-minded (moderated/regulated/balanced sound/safe outlook/perspective, latin-prudentem-careful-roots are wisely/prudent), orderly (decent, properly organized, ordered, well-prepared, latin-ornatum-root is furnished), hospitable (a good host, philos-xenos, loving strangers/foreigners/guests, fondness for guests, latin-hospitalem-hospitality-root is host/lodging), apt at teaching (able to teach, latin-doctorem-doctor- root is learned); 3Not given to wine (paroinon- para oinos- from close beside/with wine, alongside or intimate with wine, latin-non vinolentum-brawler- root intoxication- possibly getting intoxicated to the point of being violent, note this is not the common word for being drunk-methuo), not a striker (contentious, latin- non percussorem-not a striker), but rather equitable (greek-epieikes- epi eikos- be like/resemble upon, likeable, seemly, yielding, reasonable, fair, latin-modestum), not quarrelsome (not a fighter, not contentious, abstaining from fighting, peaceable, not a strife-maker, latin- non litigiosum- not litigious), not a lover of money (greek-aphilargyros- not fond of silver, non-materialistic, latin- non cupidum- not greedy); 4Presiding before (greek- pro histemi- before stand, ruling, standing before) his own house well (kalos-winsomely good), having his children in subjection (arranged under) with all gravity (dignifying, seriousness, dignity, veneration for what is worthy of respect/admiration/of real weight)- 5And if one does not know how to preside over his own house, how will he care for the church of God?- 6Not a recent convert (newly-planted, newly-growing, novice, latin and greek-neophyte), lest having been puffed up, he might fall into (unto) the condemnation (judgment) of the devil. 7And it is also necessary, to have a good (kalen) testimony from those outside, so that he might not fall into (unto) reproach (an insult aimed to damage/disgrace reputation) and the snare of the devil.

8Ministers (diakonous) likewise, must be of gravity (dignified, venerable, serious, august, weighty), not double-speaking (diologos-twice-to speak to a conclusion, to speak to two conclusions, deceitful, vacillating thus giving a misimpression by taking two sides of a conclusion, given to repetition), not being addicted (attended, devoted, held, turned, set a course and keep it) to much wine, not greedy of shameful gain (greedy of disgraceful/base/sordid gain/advantage), 9Holding to the mystery of the faith in a clear (kathara- pure, without admixture, purged, latin-pura) conscience. 10And let these be tested (approved by testing, latin-probentur like be probated- root is approve) first; then let these minister (latin-ministrent-minister, being blameless (not convictable when properly scrutinized). 11Women likewise (it is assumed to mean women ministers but the word here is just gynaikas not a plural feminine form of diakonos, the term can be used of wives but “their” wives is not qualified here as the KJV interjects the word is just simply women but context implies they are ministering, also of note in the next verse a singular gynaikos is used of male ministers wives), must be of gravity (dignify-able, dignified), not slanderers (diabolous, she-devils, to cast/throw through/because of, word used of devils, false accusers, defamers, backbiter), sober (clear-minded, free of negative influences/intoxicants), faithful in all things. 12Let ministers be husbands of one wife, presiding before their children and their own households well (kalos-winsomely good). 13For those having ministered well (kalos-winsomely good), acquire for themselves a good (kalon) standing (a step, rank, degree, step up on the staircase, a stage in a career, a position, maybe a degree of standing/stepping, latin-gradum-degree-like a grade of standing) and much resolved boldness (openness, freedom of speech, leaving a witness/proverb/statement given with a resolve that deserves to be remembered and taken seriously, latin-fiduciam-confidence like fiduciary) in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

14I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you in swiftness (speed); 15And if I should delay (to be slow, to retard, loiter, be unduly slow), so that you might know how it is necessary to conduct (behave, live, turn back, overturn, convert back) oneself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar (support, column) and base (base that supports the foundation, firm/solid base) of the truth.

16And confessedly (admittedly, as agreed, by common consent, speaking together to the same conclusion- word is an adverb) great is the mystery of godliness (well venerating the things of God shown in godly piety/reverence): He who was made apparent (visible, manifest) in the flesh, was shown to be righteous (judicially approved) in the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among (in) the ethnicities, was believed on in the world, was taken up (raised up, received up) in glory.
