2 Peter 3
Literal Emphasis Translation Par ▾
1This second letter, beloved, I already now am writing to you, in which I am stirring up (thoroughly arousing/ awakening) your transparent (clarity, shining of the sun-clear/transparent/brilliant as crystal, sincere because transparent, latin-sinceram-sincere) mind (disposition, understanding, critical/ dialectical/ thorough thinking) in remembrance, 2Be mindful (recall) of the sayings (words, rhematon) having been spoken beforehand by (under) the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through (of) your apostles;

3Knowing this first that there will come upon the last of the days mockers (scoffers) with scoffing (mocking) journeying (traveling, walking, going) according to their own passionate urges, 4And saying, “Where is the promise of His coming (arrival)? For from the time that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue (remain) as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5For this is concealed (escape notice, hidden) from them, they wanting (willing) it so, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth (land, soil) having been composed (standing together, latin-consistens-consisting) from out of the water and through water by the word of God, 6Through which the world at that time violently and completely perished having been deluged (inundated, flooded over, greek-kataklystheis like cataclysmed roots are kata-down/against and kludon-rough water/ violent surge/ to wash over), latin-inundatus-overflowed like inundated root is flooded) with water; 7However now the heavens and the earth by the same word exist having been stored up for fire, being kept (guarded) unto the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly (impious, irreverent) men.

8And, beloved, do not let this one thing be hidden from (escape notice) you, that one day with the Lord is like as a thousand years; and a thousand years are like as one day. 9The Lord does not delay (unduly slow, tarry) His promise, as some suppose slowness (delay, tardiness), but rather He is long-temperate unto you, not willing for any to perish (be destroyed), but rather all to come (make room/space) unto repentance.

10Now the day of the Lord will arrive like as a thief in stealth, in which the heavens will pass away with a great rushing noise, and the elements will be dissolved (unbound/released so that something no longer holds together) fervently burning up with great heat, and the earth and the works in it will be exposed (discovered, found out).

11All these things then being dissolved, what kind of persons it is necessary for you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12Expecting (awaiting, anticipating) and hastening (urging on) the coming (arrival) of the day of God, through which the heavens will be dissolved (latin-solventur-dissolved like become solvent), being set on fire, and the elements are melting away (made liquid), fervently burning up with great heat. 13And according to His promise, we are awaiting (expecting, anticipating) a new (fresh) heavens and a new earth in which righteousness (justice) resides (fixly dwells, settled down as a permanent resident).

14Therefore, beloved, expecting these things, be speedily diligent to be found by Him in peace, unstained and unblemished. 15And the long-temperance of our Lord, consider as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, wrote to you according to the wisdom having been given to him, 16As he also does in all his letters (epistles), speaking in them concerning these things, among which some things are hard to be understood (difficult for the intellect), which the unlearned and unstable (not firmly fixed) distort (twist, pervert, latin-depravant-twist like deprave), like as also the remaining Scriptures to their own destruction. 17You, therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, keep vigilant guard, so that you have not been led away with the error (wandering, deviation) of the lawless ones (illegal, out of place) that you should fall from your own firm stability (latin-firmitate-firmness). 18However grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and unto the day of eternity (the age). Amen.
