Berean Study Bible | English Standard Version |
First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone— | 1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, |
for kings and all those in authority—so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity. | 2for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. |
This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, | 3This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, |
who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. | 4who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. |
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, | 5For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, |
who gave Himself as a ransom for all—the testimony that was given at just the right time. | 6who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. |
For this reason I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the Gentiles. I am telling the truth; I am not lying about anything. | 7For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. |
Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or dissension. | 8I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; |
Likewise, I want the women to adorn themselves with respectable apparel, with modesty, and with self-control, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, | 9likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, |
but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess to worship God. | 10but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. |
A woman must learn in quietness and full submissiveness. | 11Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. |
I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; she is to remain quiet. | 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. |
For Adam was formed first, and then Eve. | 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve; |
And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman who was deceived and fell into transgression. | 14and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. |
Women, however, will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control. | 15Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. |
