These are the commandments and statutes and ordinances that the LORD your God has instructed me to teach you to follow in the land that you are about to enter and possess, | 1Now these are the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD your God instructed me to teach you so that you may carry them out in the land where you are headed |
so that you and your children and grandchildren may fear the LORD your God all the days of your lives by keeping all His statutes and commandments that I give you, and so that your days may be prolonged. | 2and that you may so revere the LORD your God that you will keep all his statutes and commandments that I am giving you--you, your children, and your grandchildren--all your lives, to prolong your days. |
Hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you. | 3Pay attention, Israel, and be careful to do this so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in number--as the LORD, God of your ancestors, said to you, you will have a land flowing with milk and honey. |
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One. | 4Listen, Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! |
And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. | 5You must love the LORD your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength. |
These words I am commanding you today are to be upon your hearts. | 6These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind, |
And you shall teach them diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. | 7and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up. |
Tie them as reminders on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. | 8You should tie them as a reminder on your forearm and fasten them as symbols on your forehead. |
Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates. | 9Inscribe them on the doorframes of your houses and gates. |
And when the LORD your God brings you into the land He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that He would give you—a land with great and splendid cities that you did not build, | 10Then when the LORD your God brings you to the land he promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give you--a land with large, fine cities you did not build, |
with houses full of every good thing with which you did not fill them, with wells that you did not dig, and with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant—and when you eat and are satisfied, | 11houses filled with choice things you did not accumulate, hewn out cisterns you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant--and you eat your fill, |
be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. | 12be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you out of Egypt, that place of slavery. |
Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name. | 13You must revere the LORD your God, serve him, and take oaths using only his name. |
Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you. | 14You must not go after other gods, those of the surrounding peoples, |
For the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God. Otherwise the anger of the LORD your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you off the face of the earth. | 15for the LORD your God, who is present among you, is a jealous God and his anger will erupt against you and remove you from the land. |
Do not test the LORD your God as you tested Him at Massah. | 16You must not put the LORD your God to the test as you did at Massah. |
You are to diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God and the testimonies and statutes He has given you. | 17Keep his commandments very carefully, as well as the stipulations and statutes he commanded you to observe. |
Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, so that it may be well with you and that you may enter and possess the good land that the LORD your God swore to give your fathers, | 18Do whatever is proper and good before the LORD so that it may go well with you and that you may enter and occupy the good land that he promised your ancestors, |
driving out all your enemies before you, as the LORD has said. | 19and that you may drive out all your enemies just as the LORD said. |
In the future, when your son asks, “What is the meaning of the decrees and statutes and ordinances that the LORD our God has commanded you?” | 20When your children ask you later on, "What are the stipulations, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD our God commanded you?" |
then you are to tell him, “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. | 21you must say to them, "We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt in a powerful way. |
Before our eyes the LORD inflicted great and devastating signs and wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his household. | 22And he brought signs and great, devastating wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on his whole family before our very eyes. |
But He brought us out from there to lead us in and give us the land that He had sworn to our fathers. | 23He delivered us from there so that he could give us the land he had promised our ancestors. |
And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes and to fear the LORD our God, that we may always be prosperous and preserved, as we are to this day. | 24The LORD commanded us to obey all these statutes and to revere him so that it may always go well for us and he may preserve us, as he has to this day. |
And if we are careful to observe every one of these commandments before the LORD our God, as He has commanded us, then that will be our righteousness.” | 25We will be innocent if we carefully keep all these commandments before the LORD our God, just as he demands." |
