1Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a man with a measuring line in his hand. | 1I looked again, and there was a man with a measuring line in his hand. |
2“Where are you going?” I asked. “To measure Jerusalem,” he replied, “and to determine its width and length.” | 2I asked, "Where are you going?" He replied, "To measure Jerusalem in order to determine its width and its length." |
3Then the angel who was speaking with me went out, and another angel came out to meet him | 3At this point the angelic messenger who spoke to me went out, and another messenger came to meet him |
4and said to him, “Run and tell that young man: ‘Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the multitude of men and livestock within it. | 4and said to him, "Hurry, speak to this young man as follows: 'Jerusalem will no longer be enclosed by walls because of the multitude of people and animals there. |
5For I will be a wall of fire around it, declares the LORD, and I will be the glory within it.’ ” | 5But I (the LORD says) will be a wall of fire surrounding Jerusalem and the source of glory in her midst.'" |
6“Get up! Get up! Flee from the land of the north,” declares the LORD, “for I have scattered you like the four winds of heaven,” declares the LORD. | 6"You there! Flee from the northland!" says the LORD, "for like the four winds of heaven I have scattered you," says the LORD. |
7“Get up, O Zion! Escape, you who dwell with the Daughter of Babylon!” | 7"Escape, Zion, you who live among the Babylonians!" |
8For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “After His Glory has sent Me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of His eye— | 8For the LORD who rules over all says to me that for his own glory he has sent me to the nations that plundered you--for anyone who touches you touches the pupil of his eye. |
9I will surely wave My hand over them, so that they will become plunder for their own servants. Then you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me.” | 9"I am about to punish them in such a way," he says, "that they will be looted by their own slaves." Then you will know that the LORD who rules over all has sent me. |
10“Shout for joy and be glad, O Daughter of Zion, for I am coming to dwell among you,” declares the LORD. | 10"Sing out and be happy, Zion my daughter! For look, I have come; I will settle in your midst," says the LORD. |
11“On that day many nations will join themselves to the LORD, and they will become My people. I will dwell among you, and you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me to you. | 11"Many nations will join themselves to the LORD on the day of salvation, and they will also be my people. Indeed, I will settle in the midst of you all." Then you will know that the LORD who rules over all has sent me to you. |
12And the LORD will take possession of Judah as His portion in the Holy Land, and He will once again choose Jerusalem. | 12The LORD will take possession of Judah as his portion in the holy land and he will choose Jerusalem once again. |
13Be silent before the LORD, all people, for He has roused Himself from His holy dwelling.” | 13Be silent in the LORD's presence, all people everywhere, for he is being moved to action in his holy dwelling place. |
