| 1Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered. | 1Some time later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called. “Yes,” he replied. “Here I am.” |
| 2“Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. | 3So Abraham got up early the next morning, saddled his donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated. | 3The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood for a fire for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had told him about. |

| 6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. | 7Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” | 7Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “We have the fire and the wood,” the boy said, “but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” |
| 8Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together. | 8“God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. And they both walked on together. |
| 9When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, atop the wood. | 9When they arrived at the place where God had told him to go, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied his son, Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. |
| 10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. | 10And Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice. |
| 11Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. | 11At that moment the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes,” Abraham replied. “Here I am!” |
| 12“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.” | 12“Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said. “Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.” |
| 13Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram in a thicket, caught by its horns. So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. | 13Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. |
| 14And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” | 14Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the LORD will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” |
| 15And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time, | 15Then the angel of the LORD called again to Abraham from heaven. |
| 16saying, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your only son, | 16“This is what the LORD says: Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that |
| 17I will surely bless you, and I will multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies. | 17I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies. |
| 18And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” | 18And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed—all because you have obeyed me.” |
| 19Abraham went back to his servants, and they got up and set out together for Beersheba. And Abraham settled in Beersheba. | 19Then they returned to the servants and traveled back to Beersheba, where Abraham continued to live. |
| 20Some time later, Abraham was told, “Milcah has also borne sons to your brother Nahor: | 20Soon after this, Abraham heard that Milcah, his brother Nahor’s wife, had borne Nahor eight sons. |
| 21Uz the firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram), | 21The oldest was named Uz, the next oldest was Buz, followed by Kemuel (the ancestor of the Arameans), |
| 22Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” | 22Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel. |
| 23And Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor. | 23(Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.) In addition to these eight sons from Milcah, |
| 24Moreover, Nahor’s concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. | 24Nahor had four other children from his concubine Reumah. Their names were Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. |
