| 1Later, by the Sea of Tiberias, Jesus again revealed Himself to the disciples. He made Himself known in this way: | 1Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. |
| 2Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. | 2Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. |
| 3Simon Peter told them, “I am going fishing.” “We will go with you,” they said. So they went out and got into the boat, but caught nothing that night. | 3Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. |
| 4Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize that it was Jesus. | 4At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. |
| 5So He called out to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” “No,” they answered. | 5He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. |
| 6He told them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it there, and they were unable to haul it in because of the great number of fish. | 6Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. |
| 7Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it) and jumped into the sea. | 7Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. |
| 8The other disciples came ashore in the boat. They dragged in the net full of fish, for they were not far from land, only about a hundred yards. | 8The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. |
| 9When they landed, they saw a charcoal fire there with fish on it, and some bread. | 9When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread. |
| 10Jesus told them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” | 10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. |
| 11So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many, the net was not torn. | 11So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn. |
| 12“Come, have breakfast,” Jesus said to them. None of the disciples dared to ask Him, “Who are You?” They knew it was the Lord. | 12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. |
| 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and He did the same with the fish. | 13Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. |
| 14This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after He was raised from the dead. | 14This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead. |
| 15When they had finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love Me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus replied, “Feed My lambs.” | 15After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? ” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. |
| 16Jesus asked a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” “Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus told him, “Shepherd My sheep.” | 16Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. |
| 17Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was deeply hurt that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me?” “Lord, You know all things,” he replied. “You know I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. | 17A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep. |
| 18Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked where you wanted; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” | 18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” |
| 19Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. And after He had said this, He told him, “Follow Me.” | 19Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.” |
| 20Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. He was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper to ask, “Lord, who is going to betray You?” | 20Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” |
| 21When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” | 21Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” |
| 22Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you? You follow Me!” | 22Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.” |
| 23Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. However, Jesus did not say that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you?” | 23So the rumor spread among the community of believers that this disciple wouldn’t die. But that isn’t what Jesus said at all. He only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” |
| 24This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who has written them down. And we know that his testimony is true. | 24This disciple is the one who testifies to these events and has recorded them here. And we know that his account of these things is accurate. |
| 25There are many more things that Jesus did. If all of them were written down, I suppose that not even the world itself would have space for the books that would be written. | 25Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written. |
