Job 40
CSB Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
The LORD answered Job:1And the LORD said to Job:
Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who argues with God give an answer.2“Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.”
Then Job answered the LORD:3Then Job answered the LORD and said:
I am so insignificant. How can I answer you? I place my hand over my mouth.4“Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.
I have spoken once, and I will not reply; twice, but now I can add nothing.5I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.”
Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind:6Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:
Get ready to answer me like a man; When I question you, you will inform me.7“Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.
Would you really challenge my justice? Would you declare me guilty to justify yourself?8Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right?
Do you have an arm like God's? Can you thunder with a voice like his?9Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his?
Adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, and clothe yourself with honor and glory.10“Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor.
Pour out your raging anger; look on every proud person and humiliate him.11Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him.
Look on every proud person and humble him; trample the wicked where they stand.12Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand.
Hide them together in the dust; imprison them in the grave.13Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below.
Then I will confess to you that your own right hand can deliver you.14Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you.
Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like cattle.15“Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox.
Look at the strength of his back and the power in the muscles of his belly.16Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly.
He stiffens his tail like a cedar tree; the tendons of his thighs are woven firmly together.17He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together.
His bones are bronze tubes; his limbs are like iron rods.18His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron.
He is the foremost of God's works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him.19“He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword!
The hills yield food for him, while all sorts of wild animals play there.20For the mountains yield food for him where all the wild beasts play.
He lies under the lotus plants, hiding in the protection of marshy reeds.21Under the lotus plants he lies, in the shelter of the reeds and in the marsh.
Lotus plants cover him with their shade; the willows by the brook surround him.22For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him.
Though the river rages, Behemoth is unafraid; he remains confident, even if the Jordan surges up to his mouth.23Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth.
Can anyone capture him while he looks on, or pierce his nose with snares?24Can one take him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a snare?
