Then Joseph, leaning over his father's face, wept and kissed him. | 1And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. |
He commanded his servants who were physicians to embalm his father. So they embalmed Israel. | 2And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. |
They took forty days to complete this, for embalming takes that long, and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days. | 3And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days. |
When the days of mourning were over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's household, "If I have found favor with you, please tell Pharaoh that | 4And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, |
my father made me take an oath, saying, 'I am about to die. You must bury me there in the tomb that I made for myself in the land of Canaan.' Now let me go and bury my father. Then I will return." | 5My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. |
So Pharaoh said, "Go and bury your father in keeping with your oath." | 6And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear. |
Then Joseph went to bury his father, and all Pharaoh's servants, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt went with him, | 7And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, |
along with all Joseph's family, his brothers, and his father's family. Only their dependents, their flocks, and their herds were left in the land of Goshen. | 8And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. |
Horses and chariots went up with him; it was a very impressive procession. | 9And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company. |
When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, which is across the Jordan, they lamented and wept loudly, and Joseph mourned seven days for his father. | 10And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days. |
When the Canaanite inhabitants of the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a solemn mourning on the part of the Egyptians." Therefore the place is named Abel-mizraim. It is across the Jordan. | 11And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan. |
So Jacob's sons did for him what he had commanded them. | 12And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them: |
They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave at Machpelah in the field near Mamre, which Abraham had purchased as burial property from Ephron the Hethite. | 13For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre. |
After Joseph buried his father, he returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone with him to bury his father. | 14And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. |
When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said to one another, "If Joseph is holding a grudge against us, he will certainly repay us for all the suffering we caused him." | 15And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. |
So they sent this message to Joseph, "Before he died your father gave a command: | 16And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying, |
'Say this to Joseph: Please forgive your brothers' transgression and their sin--the suffering they caused you.' Therefore, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father." Joseph wept when their message came to him. | 17So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him. |
His brothers also came to him, bowed down before him, and said, "We are your slaves!" | 18And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants. |
But Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God? | 19And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? |
You planned evil against me; God planned it for good to bring about the present result--the survival of many people. | 20But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. |
Therefore don't be afraid. I will take care of you and your children." And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. | 21Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them. |
Joseph and his father's family remained in Egypt. Joseph lived 110 years. | 22And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years. |
He saw Ephraim's sons to the third generation; the sons of Manasseh's son Machir were recognized by Joseph. | 23And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees. |
Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will certainly come to your aid and bring you up from this land to the land he swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." | 24And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. |
So Joseph made the sons of Israel take an oath: "When God comes to your aid, you are to carry my bones up from here." | 25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. |
Joseph died at the age of 110. They embalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt. | 26So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. |
