This saying is trustworthy: "If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble work." | 1It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. |
An overseer, therefore, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, self-controlled, sensible, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, | 2An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, |
not an excessive drinker, not a bully but gentle, not quarrelsome, not greedy. | 3not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. |
He must manage his own household competently and have his children under control with all dignity. | 4He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity |
(If anyone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of God's church?) | 5(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?), |
He must not be a new convert, or he might become conceited and incur the same condemnation as the devil. | 6and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil. |
Furthermore, he must have a good reputation among outsiders, so that he does not fall into disgrace and the devil's trap. | 7And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. |
Deacons, likewise, should be worthy of respect, not hypocritical, not drinking a lot of wine, not greedy for money, | 8Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain, |
holding the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. | 9but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. |
They must also be tested first; if they prove blameless, then they can serve as deacons. | 10These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. |
Wives, too, must be worthy of respect, not slanderers, self-controlled, faithful in everything. | 11Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things. |
Deacons are to be husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own households competently. | 12Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households. |
For those who have served well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. | 13For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. |
I write these things to you, hoping to come to you soon. | 14I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long; |
But if I should be delayed, I have written so that you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. | 15but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. |
And most certainly, the mystery of godliness is great: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. | 16By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory. |
