Psalm 40
CSB Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Christian Standard BibleNew International Version
I waited patiently for the LORD, and he turned to me and heard my cry for help.1For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.
He brought me up from a desolate pit, out of the muddy clay, and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.2He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and they will trust in the LORD.3He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.
How happy is anyone who has put his trust in the LORD and has not turned to the proud or to those who run after lies!4Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods.
LORD my God, you have done many things--your wondrous works and your plans for us; none can compare with you. If I were to report and speak of them, they are more than can be told.5Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare.
You do not delight in sacrifice and offering; you open my ears to listen. You do not ask for a whole burnt offering or a sin offering.6Sacrifice and offering you did not desire-- but my ears you have opened -- burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.
Then I said, "See, I have come; in the scroll it is written about me.7Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll.
I delight to do your will, my God, and your instruction is deep within me."8I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart."
I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; see, I do not keep my mouth closed--as you know, LORD.9I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, LORD, as you know.
I did not hide your righteousness in my heart; I spoke about your faithfulness and salvation; I did not conceal your constant love and truth from the great assembly.10I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help. I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness from the great assembly.
LORD, you do not withhold your compassion from me. Your constant love and truth will always guard me.11Do not withhold your mercy from me, LORD; may your love and faithfulness always protect me.
For troubles without number have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me; I am unable to see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my courage leaves me.12For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me.
LORD, be pleased to rescue me; hurry to help me, LORD.13Be pleased to save me, LORD; come quickly, LORD, to help me.
Let those who intend to take my life be disgraced and confounded. Let those who wish me harm be turned back and humiliated.14May all who want to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace.
Let those who say to me, "Aha, aha!" be appalled because of their shame.15May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame.
Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; let those who love your salvation continually say, "The LORD is great!"16But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say, "The LORD is great!"
I am oppressed and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my helper and my deliverer; my God, do not delay.17But as for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay.
