Christian Standard Bible | New Living Translation |
Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD shines over you. | 1“Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the LORD rises to shine on you. |
For look, darkness will cover the earth, and total darkness the peoples; but the LORD will shine over you, and his glory will appear over you. | 2Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the LORD rises and appears over you. |
Nations will come to your light, and kings to your shining brightness. | 3All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance. |
Raise your eyes and look around: they all gather and come to you; your sons will come from far away, and your daughters on the hips of nannies. | 4“Look and see, for everyone is coming home! Your sons are coming from distant lands; your little daughters will be carried home. |
Then you will see and be radiant, and your heart will tremble and rejoice, because the riches of the sea will become yours and the wealth of the nations will come to you. | 5Your eyes will shine, and your heart will thrill with joy, for merchants from around the world will come to you. They will bring you the wealth of many lands. |
Caravans of camels will cover your land--young camels of Midian and Ephah--all of them will come from Sheba. They will carry gold and frankincense and proclaim the praises of the LORD. | 6Vast caravans of camels will converge on you, the camels of Midian and Ephah. The people of Sheba will bring gold and frankincense and will come worshiping the LORD. |
All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered to you; the rams of Nebaioth will serve you and go up on my altar as an acceptable sacrifice. I will glorify my beautiful house. | 7The flocks of Kedar will be given to you, and the rams of Nebaioth will be brought for my altars. I will accept their offerings, and I will make my Temple glorious. |
Who are these who fly like a cloud, like doves to their shelters? | 8“And what do I see flying like clouds to Israel, like doves to their nests? |
Yes, the coasts and islands will wait for me with the ships of Tarshish in the lead, to bring your children from far away, their silver and gold with them, for the honor of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, who has glorified you. | 9They are ships from the ends of the earth, from lands that trust in me, led by the great ships of Tarshish. They are bringing the people of Israel home from far away, carrying their silver and gold. They will honor the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has filled you with splendor. |
Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you. Although I struck you in my wrath, yet I will show mercy to you with my favor. | 10“Foreigners will come to rebuild your towns, and their kings will serve you. For though I have destroyed you in my anger, I will now have mercy on you through my grace. |
Your city gates will always be open; they will never be shut day or night so that the wealth of the nations may be brought into you, with their kings being led in procession. | 11Your gates will stay open day and night to receive the wealth of many lands. The kings of the world will be led as captives in a victory procession. |
For the nation and the kingdom that will not serve you will perish; those nations will be annihilated. | 12For the nations that refuse to serve you will be destroyed. |
The glory of Lebanon will come to you--its pine, elm, and cypress together--to beautify the place of my sanctuary, and I will glorify my dwelling place. | 13“The glory of Lebanon will be yours— the forests of cypress, fir, and pine— to beautify my sanctuary. My Temple will be glorious! |
The sons of your oppressors will come and bow down to you; all who reviled you will fall facedown at your feet. They will call you the City of the LORD, Zion of the Holy One of Israel. | 14The descendants of your tormentors will come and bow before you. Those who despised you will kiss your feet. They will call you the City of the LORD, and Zion of the Holy One of Israel. |
Instead of your being deserted and hated, with no one passing through, I will make you an object of eternal pride, a joy from age to age. | 15“Though you were once despised and hated, with no one traveling through you, I will make you beautiful forever, a joy to all generations. |
You will nurse on the milk of nations, and nurse at the breast of kings; you will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior and Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. | 16Powerful kings and mighty nations will satisfy your every need, as though you were a child nursing at the breast of a queen. You will know at last that I, the LORD, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Israel. |
I will bring gold instead of bronze; I will bring silver instead of iron, bronze instead of wood, and iron instead of stones. I will appoint peace as your government and righteousness as your overseers. | 17I will exchange your bronze for gold, your iron for silver, your wood for bronze, and your stones for iron. I will make peace your leader and righteousness your ruler. |
Violence will never again be heard of in your land; devastation and destruction will be gone from your borders. You will call your walls Salvation and your city gates Praise. | 18Violence will disappear from your land; the desolation and destruction of war will end. Salvation will surround you like city walls, and praise will be on the lips of all who enter there. |
The sun will no longer be your light by day, and the brightness of the moon will not shine on you. The LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your splendor. | 19“No longer will you need the sun to shine by day, nor the moon to give its light by night, for the LORD your God will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. |
Your sun will no longer set, and your moon will not fade; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and the days of your sorrow will be over. | 20Your sun will never set; your moon will not go down. For the LORD will be your everlasting light. Your days of mourning will come to an end. |
All your people will be righteous; they will possess the land forever; they are the branch I planted, the work of my hands, so that I may be glorified. | 21All your people will be righteous. They will possess their land forever, for I will plant them there with my own hands in order to bring myself glory. |
The least will become a thousand, the smallest a mighty nation. I am the LORD; I will accomplish it quickly in its time. | 22The smallest family will become a thousand people, and the tiniest group will become a mighty nation. At the right time, I, the LORD, will make it happen.” |
