Summoning his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness.1Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.
These are the names of the twelve apostles: First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;2Here are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (also called Peter), then Andrew (Peter’s brother), James (son of Zebedee), John (James’s brother),
Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;3Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew (the tax collector), James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus,
Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.4Simon (the zealot ), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).
Jesus sent out these twelve after giving them instructions: "Don't take the road that leads to the Gentiles, and don't enter any Samaritan town.5Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans,
Instead, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.6 but only to the people of Israel—God’s lost sheep.
As you go, proclaim: 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.'7 Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near.
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you received, freely give.8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!
Don't acquire gold, silver, or copper for your money-belts.9 “Don’t take any money in your money belts—no gold, silver, or even copper coins.
Don't take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a staff, for the worker is worthy of his food.10 Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed.
When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave.11 “Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town.
Greet a household when you enter it,12 When you enter the home, give it your blessing.
and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it; but if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you.13 If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing.
If anyone does not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that house or town.14 If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.
Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.15 I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off than such a town on the judgment day.
"Look, I'm sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.16 “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.
Beware of them, because they will hand you over to local courts and flog you in their synagogues.17 But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues.
You will even be brought before governors and kings because of me, to bear witness to them and to the Gentiles.18 You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.
But when they hand you over, don't worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time.
because it isn't you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father is speaking through you.20 For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.21 “A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.
You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.22 And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.
When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.23 When you are persecuted in one town, flee to the next. I tell you the truth, the Son of Man will return before you have reached all the towns of Israel.
A disciple is not above his teacher, or a slave above his master.24 “Students are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master.
It is enough for a disciple to become like his teacher and a slave like his master. If they called the head of the house 'Beelzebul,' how much more the members of his household!25 Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names!
"Therefore, don't be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won't be uncovered and nothing hidden that won't be made known.26 “But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.
What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light. What you hear in a whisper, proclaim on the housetops.27 What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear!
Don't fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.28 “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Aren't two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's consent.29 What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin ? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.
But even the hairs of your head have all been counted.30 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.
So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.31 So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.
"Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge me before others, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.32 “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.
But whoever denies me before others, I will also deny him before my Father in heaven.33 But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.
Don't assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.34 “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.
For I came to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;35 ‘I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
and a man's enemies will be the members of his household.36 Your enemies will be right in your own household!’
The one who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; the one who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.37 “If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.
And whoever doesn't take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.38 If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.
Anyone who finds his life will lose it, and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it.39 If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.
"The one who welcomes you welcomes me, and the one who welcomes me welcomes him who sent me.40 “Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me.
Anyone who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward. And anyone who welcomes a righteous person because he's righteous will receive a righteous person's reward.41 If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God, you will be given the same reward as a prophet. And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs.
And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward."42 And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.”
