Summoning his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness.1Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς δώδεκα μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν πνευμάτων ἀκαθάρτων ὥστε ἐκβάλλειν αὐτὰ καὶ θεραπεύειν πᾶσαν νόσον καὶ πᾶσαν μαλακίαν
These are the names of the twelve apostles: First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;2Τῶν δὲ δώδεκα ἀποστόλων τὰ ὀνόματά ἐστιν ταῦτα πρῶτος Σίμων λεγόμενος Πέτρος καὶ Ἀνδρέας ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ Ἰάκωβος τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ Ἰωάννης ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ
Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;3Φίλιππος καὶ Βαρθολομαῖος Θωμᾶς καὶ Μαθθαῖος τελώνης Ἰάκωβος τοῦ Ἁλφαίου καὶ Θαδδαῖος
Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.4Σίμων Καναναῖος καὶ Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριώτης καὶ παραδοὺς αὐτόν
Jesus sent out these twelve after giving them instructions: "Don't take the road that leads to the Gentiles, and don't enter any Samaritan town.5Τούτους τοὺς δώδεκα ἀπέστειλεν Ἰησοῦς παραγγείλας αὐτοῖς λέγων Εἰς ὁδὸν ἐθνῶν μὴ ἀπέλθητε καὶ εἰς πόλιν Σαμαριτῶν μὴ εἰσέλθητε
Instead, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.6πορεύεσθε δὲ μᾶλλον πρὸς τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἀπολωλότα οἴκου Ἰσραήλ
As you go, proclaim: 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.'7πορευόμενοι δὲ κηρύσσετε λέγοντες ὅτι Ἤγγικεν βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, drive out demons.
Don't acquire gold, silver, or copper for your money-belts.9Μὴ κτήσησθε χρυσὸν μηδὲ ἄργυρον μηδὲ χαλκὸν εἰς τὰς ζώνας ὑμῶν
Don't take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a staff, for the worker is worthy of his food.10μὴ πήραν εἰς ὁδὸν μηδὲ δύο χιτῶνας μηδὲ ὑποδήματα μηδὲ ῥάβδον ἄξιος γὰρ ἐργάτης τῆς τροφῆς αὐτοῦ
When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave.11Εἰς ἣν δ’ ἂν πόλιν κώμην εἰσέλθητε ἐξετάσατε τίς ἐν αὐτῇ ἄξιός ἐστιν κἀκεῖ μείνατε ἕως ἂν ἐξέλθητε
Greet a household when you enter it,12εἰσερχόμενοι δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν ἀσπάσασθε αὐτήν
and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it; but if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you.13καὶ ἐὰν μὲν οἰκία ἀξία ἐλθάτω εἰρήνη ὑμῶν ἐπ’ αὐτήν ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἀξία εἰρήνη ὑμῶν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐπιστραφήτω
If anyone does not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that house or town.14καὶ ὃς ἂν μὴ δέξηται ὑμᾶς μηδὲ ἀκούσῃ τοὺς λόγους ὑμῶν ἐξερχόμενοι ἔξω τῆς οἰκίας τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης ἐκτινάξατε τὸν κονιορτὸν τῶν ποδῶν ὑμῶν
Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.15ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται γῇ Σοδόμων καὶ Γομόρρων ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ
"Look, I'm sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.16Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω ὑμᾶς ὡς πρόβατα ἐν μέσῳ λύκων γίνεσθε οὖν φρόνιμοι ὡς οἱ ὄφεις καὶ ἀκέραιοι ὡς αἱ περιστεραί
Beware of them, because they will hand you over to local courts and flog you in their synagogues.17Προσέχετε δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων παραδώσουσιν γὰρ ὑμᾶς εἰς συνέδρια καὶ ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς αὐτῶν μαστιγώσουσιν ὑμᾶς
You will even be brought before governors and kings because of me, to bear witness to them and to the Gentiles.18καὶ ἐπὶ ἡγεμόνας δὲ καὶ βασιλεῖς ἀχθήσεσθε ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν
But when they hand you over, don't worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,19ὅταν δὲ παραδῶσιν ὑμᾶς μὴ μεριμνήσητε πῶς τί λαλήσητε δοθήσεται γὰρ ὑμῖν ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ τί λαλήσητε
because it isn't you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father is speaking through you.20οὐ γὰρ ὑμεῖς ἐστε οἱ λαλοῦντες ἀλλὰ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Πατρὸς ὑμῶν τὸ λαλοῦν ἐν ὑμῖν
"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.21Παραδώσει δὲ ἀδελφὸς ἀδελφὸν εἰς θάνατον καὶ πατὴρ τέκνον καὶ ἐπαναστήσονται τέκνα ἐπὶ γονεῖς καὶ θανατώσουσιν αὐτούς
You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.22καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος οὗτος σωθήσεται
When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.23Ὅταν δὲ διώκωσιν ὑμᾶς ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ φεύγετε εἰς τὴν ἑτέραν ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν οὐ μὴ τελέσητε τὰς πόλεις τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἕως ‹ἂν› ἔλθῃ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
A disciple is not above his teacher, or a slave above his master.24Οὐκ ἔστιν μαθητὴς ὑπὲρ τὸν διδάσκαλον οὐδὲ δοῦλος ὑπὲρ τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ
It is enough for a disciple to become like his teacher and a slave like his master. If they called the head of the house 'Beelzebul,' how much more the members of his household!25ἀρκετὸν τῷ μαθητῇ ἵνα γένηται ὡς διδάσκαλος αὐτοῦ καὶ δοῦλος ὡς κύριος αὐτοῦ εἰ τὸν οἰκοδεσπότην Βεελζεβοὺλ ἐπεκάλεσαν πόσῳ μᾶλλον τοὺς οἰκιακοὺς αὐτοῦ
"Therefore, don't be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won't be uncovered and nothing hidden that won't be made known.26Μὴ οὖν φοβηθῆτε αὐτούς οὐδὲν γάρ ἐστιν κεκαλυμμένον οὐκ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται καὶ κρυπτὸν οὐ γνωσθήσεται
What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light. What you hear in a whisper, proclaim on the housetops.27 λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ εἴπατε ἐν τῷ φωτί καὶ εἰς τὸ οὖς ἀκούετε κηρύξατε ἐπὶ τῶν δωμάτων
Don't fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.28Καὶ μὴ φοβεῖσθε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποκτεννόντων τὸ σῶμα τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν μὴ δυναμένων ἀποκτεῖναι φοβεῖσθε δὲ μᾶλλον τὸν δυνάμενον καὶ ψυχὴν καὶ σῶμα ἀπολέσαι ἐν γεέννῃ
Aren't two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's consent.29Οὐχὶ δύο στρουθία ἀσσαρίου πωλεῖται καὶ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐ πεσεῖται ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἄνευ τοῦ Πατρὸς ὑμῶν
But even the hairs of your head have all been counted.30ὑμῶν δὲ καὶ αἱ τρίχες τῆς κεφαλῆς πᾶσαι ἠριθμημέναι εἰσίν
So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.31μὴ οὖν φοβεῖσθε πολλῶν στρουθίων διαφέρετε ὑμεῖς
"Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge me before others, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.32Πᾶς οὖν ὅστις ὁμολογήσει ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὁμολογήσω κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
But whoever denies me before others, I will also deny him before my Father in heaven.33ὅστις δ’ ἂν ἀρνήσηταί με ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀρνήσομαι κἀγὼ αὐτὸν ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
Don't assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.34Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν οὐκ ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἀλλὰ μάχαιραν
For I came to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;35ἦλθον γὰρ διχάσαι Ἄνθρωπον κατὰ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Καὶ θυγατέρα κατὰ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς Καὶ νύμφην κατὰ τῆς πενθερᾶς αὐτῆς
and a man's enemies will be the members of his household.36Καὶ ἐχθροὶ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οἱ οἰκιακοὶ αὐτοῦ
The one who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; the one who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.37 φιλῶν πατέρα μητέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος καὶ φιλῶν υἱὸν θυγατέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος
And whoever doesn't take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.38καὶ ὃς οὐ λαμβάνει τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκολουθεῖ ὀπίσω μου οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος
Anyone who finds his life will lose it, and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it.39 εὑρὼν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπολέσει αὐτήν καὶ ἀπολέσας τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εὑρήσει αὐτήν
"The one who welcomes you welcomes me, and the one who welcomes me welcomes him who sent me.40 δεχόμενος ὑμᾶς ἐμὲ δέχεται καὶ ἐμὲ δεχόμενος δέχεται τὸν ἀποστείλαντά με
Anyone who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward. And anyone who welcomes a righteous person because he's righteous will receive a righteous person's reward.41 δεχόμενος προφήτην εἰς ὄνομα προφήτου μισθὸν προφήτου λήμψεται καὶ δεχόμενος δίκαιον εἰς ὄνομα δικαίου μισθὸν δικαίου λήμψεται
And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward."42καὶ ὃς ἂν* ποτίσῃ ἕνα τῶν μικρῶν τούτων ποτήριον ψυχροῦ μόνον εἰς ὄνομα μαθητοῦ ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσῃ τὸν μισθὸν αὐτοῦ
