| 1If it had not been the LORD who was on our side— let Israel now say— | 1A Davidic song of ascents. If the LORD had not been on our side-- let Israel say-- |
| 2if it had not been the LORD who was on our side when people rose up against us, | 2If the LORD had not been on our side when men attacked us, |
| 3then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us; | 3then they would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger against us. |
| 4then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us; | 4Then the waters would have engulfed us; the torrent would have swept over us; |
| 5then over us would have gone the raging waters. | 5the raging waters would have swept over us. |
| 6Blessed be the LORD, who has not given us as prey to their teeth! | 6Praise the LORD, who has not let us be ripped apart by their teeth. |
| 7We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped! | 7We have escaped like a bird from the hunter's net; the net is torn, and we have escaped. |
| 8Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth. | 8Our help is in the name of Yahweh, the Maker of heaven and earth. |
