Psalm 40
ESV Parallel HCSB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
English Standard VersionHolman Christian Standard Bible
I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry.1For the choir director. A Davidic psalm. I waited patiently for the LORD, and He turned to me and heard my cry for help.
He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.2He brought me up from a desolate pit, out of the muddy clay, and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.3He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.
Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!4How happy is the man who has put his trust in the LORD and has not turned to the proud or to those who run after lies!
You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.5 LORD my God, You have done many things-- Your wonderful works and Your plans for us; none can compare with You. If I were to report and speak of them, they are more than can be told.
In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.6You do not delight in sacrifice and offering; You open my ears to listen. You do not ask for a whole burnt offering or a sin offering.
Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:7Then I said, "See, I have come; it is written about me in the volume of the scroll.
I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”8I delight to do Your will, my God; Your instruction lives within me."
I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD.9I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; see, I do not keep my mouth closed-- as You know, LORD.
I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.10I did not hide Your righteousness in my heart; I spoke about Your faithfulness and salvation; I did not conceal Your constant love and truth from the great assembly.
As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!11 LORD, do not withhold Your compassion from me; Your constant love and truth will always guard me.
For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.12For troubles without number have surrounded me; my sins have overtaken me; I am unable to see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my courage leaves me.
Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me!13 LORD, be pleased to deliver me; hurry to help me, LORD.
Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt!14Let those who seek to take my life be disgraced and confounded. Let those who wish me harm be driven back and humiliated.
Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”15Let those who say to me, "Aha, aha!" be horrified because of their shame.
But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the LORD!”16Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; let those who love Your salvation continually say," The LORD is great!"
As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!17I am afflicted and needy; the Lord thinks of me. You are my helper and my deliverer; my God, do not delay.
