English Standard Version | New Living Translation |
I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. | 1I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. |
He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. | 2He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. |
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. | 3He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD. |
Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! | 4Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols. |
You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told. | 5O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them. |
In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. | 6You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand — you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings. |
Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me: | 7Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: |
I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.” | 8I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.” |
I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD. | 9I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know. |
I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation. | 10I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness. |
As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me! | 11LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. |
For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me. | 12For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage. |
Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me! | 13Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me. |
Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt! | 14May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. |
Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!” | 15Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!” |
But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the LORD!” | 16But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!” |
As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God! | 17As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay. |
