Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar.1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had not given birth to any children, but she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar.
And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.2So Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from having children, have sexual relations with my servant. Perhaps I can have a family by her." Abram did what Sarai told him.
So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife.3So after Abram had lived in Canaan for ten years, Sarai, Abram's wife, gave Hagar, her Egyptian servant, to her husband to be his wife.
And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.4He had sexual relations with Hagar, and she became pregnant. Once Hagar realized she was pregnant, she despised Sarai.
And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me!”5Then Sarai said to Abram, "You have brought this wrong on me! I allowed my servant to have sexual relations with you, but when she realized that she was pregnant, she despised me. May the LORD judge between you and me!"
But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.6Abram said to Sarai, "Since your servant is under your authority, do to her whatever you think best." Then Sarai treated Hagar harshly, so she ran away from Sarai.
The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur.7The LORD's angel found Hagar near a spring of water in the desert--the spring that is along the road to Shur.
And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.”8He said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress, Sarai."
The angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.”9Then the LORD's angel said to her, "Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.
The angel of the LORD also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.”10I will greatly multiply your descendants," the LORD's angel added, "so that they will be too numerous to count."
And the angel of the LORD said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has listened to your affliction.11Then the LORD's angel said to her, "You are now pregnant and are about to give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your painful groans.
He shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”12He will be a wild donkey of a man. He will be hostile to everyone, and everyone will be hostile to him. He will live away from his brothers."
So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”13So Hagar named the LORD who spoke to her, "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "Here I have seen one who sees me!"
Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.14That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. (It is located between Kadesh and Bered.)
And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.15So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, whom Abram named Ishmael.
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.16(Now Abram was 86 years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.)
