English Standard Version | New Living Translation |
David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader. | 1David consulted with all his officials, including the generals and captains of his army. |
And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and from the LORD our God, let us send abroad to our brothers who remain in all the lands of Israel, as well as to the priests and Levites in the cities that have pasturelands, that they may be gathered to us. | 2Then he addressed the entire assembly of Israel as follows: “If you approve and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send messages to all the Israelites throughout the land, including the priests and Levites in their towns and pasturelands. Let us invite them to come and join us. |
Then let us bring again the ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul.” | 3It is time to bring back the Ark of our God, for we neglected it during the reign of Saul.” |
All the assembly agreed to do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people. | 4The whole assembly agreed to this, for the people could see it was the right thing to do. |
So David assembled all Israel from the Nile of Egypt to Lebo-hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. | 5So David summoned all Israel, from the Shihor Brook of Egypt in the south all the way to the town of Lebo-hamath in the north, to join in bringing the Ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. |
And David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the LORD who sits enthroned above the cherubim. | 6Then David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (also called Kiriath-jearim) to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the LORD who is enthroned between the cherubim. |
And they carried the ark of God on a new cart, from the house of Abinadab, and Uzzah and Ahio were driving the cart. | 7They placed the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from Abinadab’s house. Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart. |
And David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, with song and lyres and harps and tambourines and cymbals and trumpets. | 8David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets. |
And when they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah put out his hand to take hold of the ark, for the oxen stumbled. | 9But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the Ark. |
And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark, and he died there before God. | 10Then the LORD’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had laid his hand on the Ark. So Uzzah died there in the presence of God. |
And David was angry because the LORD had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzza to this day. | 11David was angry because the LORD’s anger had burst out against Uzzah. He named that place Perez-uzzah (which means “to burst out against Uzzah”), as it is still called today. |
And David was afraid of God that day, and he said, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?” | 12David was now afraid of God, and he asked, “How can I ever bring the Ark of God back into my care?” |
So David did not take the ark home into the city of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. | 13So David did not move the Ark into the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath. |
And the ark of God remained with the household of Obed-edom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that he had. | 14The Ark of God remained there in Obed-edom’s house for three months, and the LORD blessed the household of Obed-edom and everything he owned. |
