| 1But you must say the things that are consistent with sound teaching. | 1But as for you, teach what is consistent with healthy doctrine. |
| 2Older men are to be level headed, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. | 2Older men are to be sober, serious, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. |
| 3In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to much wine. They are to teach what is good, | 3Likewise, older women are to show their reverence for God by their behavior. They are not to be gossips or addicted to alcohol, but to be examples of goodness. |
| 4so they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, | 4They should encourage the younger women to love their husbands, to love their children, |
| 5to be self-controlled, pure, homemakers, kind, and submissive to their husbands, so that God's message will not be slandered. | 5to be sensible and pure, to manage their households, to be kind, and to submit themselves to their husbands. Otherwise, the word of God may be discredited. |
| 6In the same way, encourage the young men to be self-controlled | 6Likewise, encourage the younger men to be sensible. |

| 8Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us. | 8Use wholesome speech that cannot be condemned. Then any opponent will be ashamed because he cannot say anything bad about us. |
| 9Slaves are to be submissive to their masters in everything, and to be well-pleasing, not talking back | 9Slaves are to submit to their masters in everything, aiming to please them and not argue with them |
