Holman Christian Standard Bible | New International Version |
You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut yourselves or make a bald spot on your head on behalf of the dead, | 1You are the children of the LORD your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead, |
for you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. The LORD has chosen you to be His own possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth." | 2for you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the LORD has chosen you to be his treasured possession. |
You must not eat any detestable thing. | 3Do not eat any detestable thing. |
These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, | 4These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, |
the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep. | 5the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep. |
You may eat any animal that has hooves divided in two and chews the cud. | 6You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud. |
But among the ones that chew the cud or have divided hooves, you are not to eat these: the camel, the hare, and the hyrax, though they chew the cud, they do not have hooves-- they are unclean for you; | 7However, of those that chew the cud or that have a divided hoof you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the hyrax. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a divided hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you. |
and the pig, though it has hooves, it does not chew the cud-- it is unclean for you. You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses." | 8The pig is also unclean; although it has a divided hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses. |
You may eat everything from the water that has fins and scales, | 9Of all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and scales. |
but you may not eat anything that does not have fins and scales--it is unclean for you." | 10But anything that does not have fins and scales you may not eat; for you it is unclean. |
You may eat every clean bird, | 11You may eat any clean bird. |
but these are the ones you may not eat: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture, | 12But these you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, |
the kite, any kind of falcon, | 13the red kite, the black kite, any kind of falcon, |
every kind of raven, | 14any kind of raven, |
the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, | 15the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, |
the little owl, the long-eared owl, the white owl, | 16the little owl, the great owl, the white owl, |
the desert owl, the osprey, the cormorant, | 17the desert owl, the osprey, the cormorant, |
the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat. | 18the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat. |
All winged insects are unclean for you; they may not be eaten. | 19All flying insects are unclean to you; do not eat them. |
But you may eat every clean flying creature." | 20But any winged creature that is clean you may eat. |
You are not to eat any carcass; you may give it to a temporary resident living within your gates, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. You must not boil a young goat in its mother's milk." | 21Do not eat anything you find already dead. You may give it to the foreigner residing in any of your towns, and they may eat it, or you may sell it to any other foreigner. But you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk. |
Each year you are to set aside a tenth of all the produce grown in your fields. | 22Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. |
You are to eat a tenth of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, in the presence of Yahweh your God at the place where He chooses to have His name dwell, so that you will always learn to fear the LORD your God. | 23Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. |
But if the distance is too great for you to carry it, since the place where Yahweh your God chooses to put His name is too far away from you and since the LORD your God has blessed you, | 24But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the LORD your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the LORD will choose to put his Name is so far away), |
then exchange it for money, take the money in your hand, and go to the place the LORD your God chooses. | 25then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the LORD your God will choose. |
You may spend the money on anything you want: cattle, sheep, wine, beer, or anything you desire. You are to feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice with your family. | 26Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice. |
Do not neglect the Levite within your gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you." | 27And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own. |
At the end of every three years, bring a tenth of all your produce for that year and store it within your gates. | 28At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's produce and store it in your towns, |
Then the Levite, who has no portion or inheritance among you, the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow within your gates may come, eat, and be satisfied. And the LORD your God will bless you in all the work of your hands that you do." | 29so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. |
