Now the Spirit says clearly that in the last times some people will abandon the faith by following deceitful spirits, the teachings of demons, 1Now the Spirit expressly states that in later times some will abandon the faith to follow deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons,
and the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences have been burned by a hot iron. 2influenced by the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences are seared with a hot iron.
They will try to stop people from marrying and from eating certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 3They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from certain foods that God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
For everything God created is good, and nothing should be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 4For every creation of God is good, and nothing that is received with thanksgiving should be rejected,
because it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.5because it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
If you continue to point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good servant of the Messiah Jesus, nourished by the words of the faith and the healthy teaching that you have followed closely. 6By pointing out these things to the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of faith and sound instruction that you have followed.
Do not have anything to do with godless myths and fables of old women. Instead, train yourself to be godly. 7But reject irreverent, silly myths. Instead, train yourself for godliness.
Physical exercise is of limited value, but Godliness is very dear, a pledge of life, both there and here.8For physical exercise is of limited value, but godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for the present life and for the one to come.
This is a trustworthy saying that deserves complete acceptance.9This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance.
To this end we work hard and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, that is, of those who believe.10To this end we labor and strive, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of everyone, and especially of those who believe.
These are the things you must insist on and teach. 11Command and teach these things.
Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for other believers in your speech, behavior, love, faithfulness, and purity. 12Let no one despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
Until I arrive, give your full concentration to the public reading of Scripture, to exhorting, and to teaching. 13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, and to teaching.
Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy when the elders laid their hands on you. 14Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given you through the prophecy spoken over you at the laying on of the hands of the elders.
Think on these things. Devote your life to them so that everyone can see your progress. 15Be diligent in these matters and absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.
Pay close attention to your life and your teaching. Persevere in these things, because if you do so, you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.16Pay close attention to your life and to your teaching. Persevere in these things, for by so doing you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
