Ezekiel 4
ISV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionEnglish Standard Version
"And now Son of Man, you are to take a brick, set it in front of you, and inscribe on it the outline of the city—that is, Jerusalem.1“And you, son of man, take a brick and lay it before you, and engrave on it a city, even Jerusalem.
You are to lay siege against it, build a rampart around it, set a bulwark against it, encircle it with a berm, set up camps against it, and place battering rams around it. 2And put siegeworks against it, and build a siege wall against it, and cast up a mound against it. Set camps also against it, and plant battering rams against it all around.
Then you are to take a flat, iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between you and the city. "Next, you are to turn toward it, oppose it, and place it under siege, because you are to lay siege to it. All of this will serve as a sign to the house of Israel.3And you, take an iron griddle, and place it as an iron wall between you and the city; and set your face toward it, and let it be in a state of siege, and press the siege against it. This is a sign for the house of Israel.
"Now as for you, you are to sleep on your left side, symbolically bearing the punishment of the house of Israel while you're counting the days you'll be sleeping on your left side to bear symbolically the punishment for their sin. 4“Then lie on your left side, and place the punishment of the house of Israel upon it. For the number of the days that you lie on it, you shall bear their punishment.
I've assigned you to sleep this way for 390 days, representing the years they've been sinning, as you bear symbolically the punishment of the house of Israel. 5For I assign to you a number of days, 390 days, equal to the number of the years of their punishment. So long shall you bear the punishment of the house of Israel.
When you have completed this, you are to sleep on your right side, symbolically bearing the iniquity of Judah for 40 days. Each day that I've assigned to you represents one year. 6And when you have completed these, you shall lie down a second time, but on your right side, and bear the punishment of the house of Judah. Forty days I assign you, a day for each year.
After this, you are to turn toward the rampart of Jerusalem and oppose it with your bare arms, because I'm going to prophesy about it. 7And you shall set your face toward the siege of Jerusalem, with your arm bared, and you shall prophesy against the city.
Look! I'll tie you up so that you're unable to turn from one side to the other until you've completed your siege."8And behold, I will place cords upon you, so that you cannot turn from one side to the other, till you have completed the days of your siege.
"Furthermore, you are to take some wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt, and mix them together in one container. Then you are to make bread from these grains sufficient to supply you through the time during which you'll be sleeping on your side. You are to eat it for 390 days. 9“And you, take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and emmer, and put them into a single vessel and make your bread from them. During the number of days that you lie on your side, 390 days, you shall eat it.
The food that you'll be eating is to consist of portions weighing 20 shekels, to be consumed daily at regular intervals.10And your food that you eat shall be by weight, twenty shekels a day; from day to day you shall eat it.
You are to measure one sixth of one hin of water each time you drink it. 11And water you shall drink by measure, the sixth part of a hin; from day to day you shall drink.
You are to eat it as barley cakes and bake it right in front of them, using dried human dung for cooking fuel." 12And you shall eat it as a barley cake, baking it in their sight on human dung.”
Then the LORD said, "This is how the Israelis will be eating unclean food among the nations, where I'll be sending them."13And the LORD said, “Thus shall the people of Israel eat their bread unclean, among the nations where I will drive them.”
"Now, Lord GOD," I replied, "I've never been defiled, ever since I was young until now. I haven't eaten an animal that died on its own or was torn by beasts, and no unclean meat has ever entered my mouth!"14Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I have never defiled myself. From my youth up till now I have never eaten what died of itself or was torn by beasts, nor has tainted meat come into my mouth.”
"Okay," he responded. "I'll allow you to substitute cow's dung for human dung. Cook your food over that."15Then he said to me, “See, I assign to you cow’s dung instead of human dung, on which you may prepare your bread.”
He also told me, "Son of Man, look! I'm about to disrupt the source of bread in Jerusalem. As a result, they'll ration bread by weight while their terror continues to grow and they'll ration drinking water while their horror continues to mount! 16Moreover, he said to me, “Son of man, behold, I will break the supply of bread in Jerusalem. They shall eat bread by weight and with anxiety, and they shall drink water by measure and in dismay.
Indeed, they'll need bread and water, but everyone will be panic-stricken as they waste away in their iniquity."17I will do this that they may lack bread and water, and look at one another in dismay, and rot away because of their punishment.
