| 1Meanwhile the boy Samuel was serving the LORD before Eli. A word from the LORD was rare in those days, and visions were infrequent. | 1The boy Samuel served the LORD in Eli's presence. In those days the word of the LORD was rare and prophetic visions were not widespread. |
| 2At that time Eli, whose vision was growing dim, was lying down in his bedroom. | 2One day Eli, whose eyesight was failing, was lying in his room. |
| 3The lamp of God had not yet been extinguished, and Samuel was lying down in the tent of the LORD where the Ark of God was. | 3Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the tabernacle of the LORD, where the ark of God was located. |

| 13I've told him that I'm about to judge his family forever because of the iniquity that he knew about. His sons committed blasphemy and he did not rebuke them. | 13I told him that I am going to judge his family forever because of the iniquity he knows about: his sons are defiling the sanctuary, and he has not stopped them. |

| 15Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD, but he was afraid to report the vision to Eli. | 15Samuel lay down until the morning; then he opened the doors of the LORD's house. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, |
| 16Then Eli called Samuel: "Samuel, my son." He said, "Here I am." | 16but Eli called him and said, "Samuel, my son." "Here I am," answered Samuel. |
| 17Eli said, "What did the LORD say to you? Please don't conceal anything from me. May God do this to you and even more if you conceal from me one word of all that he spoke to you." | 17"What was the message He gave you?" Eli asked. "Don't hide it from me. May God punish you and do so severely if you hide anything from me that He told you." |
| 18So Samuel told him everything—he did not conceal anything from him. Eli said, "He is the LORD. May he do what seems good to him." | 18So Samuel told him everything and did not hide anything from him. Eli responded, "He is the LORD. He will do what He thinks is good." |
| 19As Samuel grew, the LORD was with him and did not let any of Samuel's predictions fail. | 19Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and He fulfilled everything Samuel prophesied. |
