| 1 "During the third year of King Belshazzar's reign, I, Daniel, saw a vision after the earlier vision that had appeared to me. | 1In the third year of King Belshazzar's reign, a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after the one that had appeared to me earlier. |
| 2As I observed the vision, I looked around the citadel of Susa in Elam Province. While I watched, I found myself beside the Ulai Canal. | 2I saw the vision, and as I watched, I was in the fortress city of Susa, in the province of Elam. I saw in the vision that I was beside the Ulai Canal. |
| 3"Then I turned my head to look, and to my surprise, a two-horned ram was standing beside the canal. The two horns grew long, the first one growing longer than the second, with the longer one springing up last. | 3I looked up, and there was a ram standing beside the canal. He had two horns. The two horns were long, but one was longer than the other, and the longer one came up last. |
| 4I watched the ram charging westward, northward, and southward. No animal could stand before him, nor was there anyone who could deliver from his control. He did as he pleased and exalted himself. | 4I saw the ram charging to the west, the north, and the south. No animal could stand against him, and there was no rescue from his power. He did whatever he wanted and became great. |
| 5"As I watched and wondered, a male goat was coming from the west over the surface of the entire earth without touching the ground. The goat had a distinctive horn between its eyes. | 5As I was observing, a male goat appeared, coming from the west across the surface of the entire earth without touching the ground. The goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes. |
| 6It approached the ram with the two horns that I had observed while standing beside the canal, and charged at him, out of control with rage. | 6He came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and rushed at him with savage fury. |
| 7I saw it approach the ram, overflowing with fury at him, and run into him with the full force of its strength. The goat shattered the ram's two horns, and the ram could not oppose it. So the goat threw him to the ground and trampled him. No one could rescue the ram from its control. | 7I saw him approaching the ram, and infuriated with him, he struck the ram, shattering his two horns, and the ram was not strong enough to stand against him. The goat threw him to the ground and trampled him, and there was no one to rescue the ram from his power. |
| 8Then the goat grew extremely great, but when it was strong, its great horn was shattered. In its place, four distinctive horns grew out in all directions." | 8Then the male goat became very great, but when he became powerful, the large horn was shattered. | 9"A somewhat insignificant horn emerged from one of them. It moved rapidly against the south, against the east, and against the Glory. | 9From one of them a little horn emerged and grew extensively toward the south and the east and toward the beautiful land. |
| 10Then it moved against the Heavenly Army. It persuaded some of the Heavenly Army to fall to the earth, along with some of the stars, and it trampled them. | 10It grew as high as the heavenly host, made some of the stars and some of the host fall to the earth, and trampled them. |
| 11Then it set itself in arrogant opposition to the Prince of the Heavenly Army, from whom the regular burnt offering was taken away, in order to overthrow his sanctuary. | 11It made itself great, even up to the Prince of the host; it removed His daily sacrifice and overthrew the place of His sanctuary. |
| 12Because of the transgression, the Heavenly Army will be given over, along with the regular burnt offering, and in that rebellion truth will be cast to the ground, while he continues to prosper and to act." | 12Because of rebellion, a host, together with the daily sacrifice, will be given over. The horn will throw truth to the ground and will be successful in whatever it does. |
| 13"Then I heard one holy person speaking, and another holy person addressed the one who was speaking: 'In the vision about the regular burnt offering, how much time elapses while the desecration terrifies and both the Holy Place and the Heavenly Army are trampled?' | 13Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the speaker, "How long will the events of this vision last--the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and of the host to be trampled?" |
| 14"He told me, 'For 2,300 days. Then the Holy Place will be restored.'" | 14He said to me, "For 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be restored." |
| 15"After I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I tried to understand it. All of a sudden, there was standing in front of me one who appeared to be valiant. | 15While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there stood before me someone who appeared to be a man. |
| 16I heard the voice of a man calling out from the Ulai Canal, 'Gabriel, interpret what that fellow has been seeing.' | 16I heard a human voice calling from the middle of the Ulai: "Gabriel, explain the vision to this man." |
| 17"As he approached where I was standing, I became terrified and fell on my face. But he told me, 'Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end.' | 17So he approached where I was standing; when he came near, I was terrified and fell facedown. "Son of man," he said to me, "understand that the vision refers to the time of the end." |
| 18"While he had been speaking with me, I had fainted on my face, but he touched me and enabled me to stand upright on my feet. | 18While he was speaking to me, I fell into a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me, made me stand up, |
| 19Then he said, 'Pay attention! I'm going to brief you about what will happen at the end of the period of wrath, because its end is appointed. | 19and said, "I am here to tell you what will happen at the conclusion of the time of wrath, because it refers to the appointed time of the end. |
| 20The ram that you saw with a pair of horns are the kings of Media and Persia. | 20The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia. |
| 21The demonic goat is the king of Greece, and the great horn between its eyes is its first king. | 21The shaggy goat represents the king of Greece, and the large horn between his eyes represents the first king. |
| 22The shattered horn and the four that took its place are four kingdoms that will come from his nation, but they will not have his strength. | 22The four horns that took the place of the shattered horn represent four kingdoms. They will rise from that nation, but without its power. |
| 23"Toward the end of their rule, as the desecrations proceed, an insolent king will arise, proficient at deception. | 23Near the end of their kingdoms, when the rebels have reached the full measure of their sin, an insolent king, skilled in intrigue, will come to the throne. |
| 24Mighty will be his skills, but not from his own abilities. He'll be remarkably destructive, will succeed, and will do whatever he wants, destroying mighty men and the holy people. | 24His power will be great, but it will not be his own. He will cause terrible destruction and succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the powerful along with the holy people. |
| 25Through his skill he'll cause deceit to prosper under his leadership. He'll promote himself and will destroy many while they are secure. He'll take a stand against the Prince of Princes, yet he'll be crushed without human help. | 25He will cause deceit to prosper through his cunning and by his influence, and in his own mind he will make himself great. He will destroy many in a time of peace; he will even stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be shattered--not by human hands. |
| 26The vision about the twilights and dawnings that has been related is trustworthy, but keep its vision secret, because it pertains to the distant future.' | 26The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told is true. Now you must seal up the vision because it refers to many days in the future." |
| 27Then I, Daniel, was exhausted and ill for days, but afterward I got up and went about the king's business. Nevertheless, I was astonished by the vision, and could not understand it." | 27I, Daniel, was overcome and lay sick for days. Then I got up and went about the king's business. I was greatly disturbed by the vision and could not understand it. |
