At that time Herod the tetrarch, hearing about the fame of Jesus, | 1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus, |
told his servants, "This is John the Baptist! He has been raised from the dead, and that's why these miracles are being done by him." | 2and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him." |
Herod had arrested John, bound him with chains, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. | 3For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. |
John had been telling him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." | 4For John had been saying to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." |
Although Herod wanted to kill him, he was afraid of the crowd, since they regarded John as a prophet. | 5Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded John as a prophet. |
But when Herod's birthday celebration was held, the daughter of Herodias danced before the guests. She pleased Herod | 6But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod, |
so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked for. | 7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. |
Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me, right here on a platter, the head of John the Baptist." | 8Having been prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." |
Under pressure because of his promises and his assembled guests, the king ordered that it be done. | 9Although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths, and because of his dinner guests. |
So he sent word and had John beheaded in prison. | 10He sent and had John beheaded in the prison. |
His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she took it to her mother. | 11And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. |
When John's disciples came, they carried off the body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus. | 12His disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus. |
When Jesus heard this, he left that place and went by boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of it and followed him on foot from the neighboring towns. | 13Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. |
When he got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He had compassion for them and healed their sick. | 14When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick. |
When evening had come, the disciples went to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and it's already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves." | 15When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves." |
But Jesus told them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat." | 16But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!" |
They told him, "We don't have anything here except five loaves of bread and two fish." | 17They said to Him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish." |
He said, "Bring them to me." | 18And He said, "Bring them here to Me." |
Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves in pieces and gave them to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. | 19Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, |
All of them ate and were filled. Then the disciples picked up what was left of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. | 20and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets. |
Now those who had eaten were about 5,000 men, besides women and children. | 21There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children. |
Jesus immediately had the disciples get into a boat and cross to the other side ahead of him, while he sent the crowds away. | 22Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. |
After dismissing the crowds, he went up on a hillside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone. | 23After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. |
By this time the boat was in the middle of the sea and was being battered by the waves, because the wind was against them. | 24But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. |
Shortly before dawn, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. | 25And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. |
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and cried out, "It's a ghost!" And they screamed in terror. | 26When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear. |
"Have courage!" Jesus immediately told them. "It's me. Stop being afraid!" | 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." |
Peter answered him, "Lord, if it's you, order me to come to you on the water." | 28Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." |
Jesus said, "Come on!" So Peter got down out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came to Jesus. | 29And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. |
But when he noticed the strong wind, he was frightened. As he began to sink, he shouted, "Lord, save me!" | 30But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" |
At once Jesus reached out his hand, caught him, and asked him, "You who have so little faith, why did you doubt?" | 31Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" |
As they got into the boat, the wind stopped blowing. | 32When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. |
Then the men in the boat began to worship Jesus, saying, "You certainly are the Son of God!" | 33And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly God's Son!" |
They crossed over and came ashore at Gennesaret. | 34When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. |
When the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word throughout that region and brought him everyone who was sick. | 35And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick; |
They kept begging him to let them touch just the tassel of his garment, and everyone who touched it was completely healed. | 36and they implored Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were cured. |
