At that time Herod the tetrarch, hearing about the fame of Jesus, 1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard reports about Jesus,
told his servants, "This is John the Baptist! He has been raised from the dead, and that's why these miracles are being done by him." 2and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead! And because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him."
Herod had arrested John, bound him with chains, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.3For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
John had been telling him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." 4because John had repeatedly told him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
Although Herod wanted to kill him, he was afraid of the crowd, since they regarded John as a prophet.5Although Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd because they accepted John as a prophet.
But when Herod's birthday celebration was held, the daughter of Herodias danced before the guests. She pleased Herod 6But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,
so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked for. 7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me, right here on a platter, the head of John the Baptist." 8Instructed by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter."
Under pressure because of his promises and his assembled guests, the king ordered that it be done. 9Although it grieved the king, because of his oath and the dinner guests he commanded it to be given.
So he sent word and had John beheaded in prison. 10So he sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she took it to her mother. 11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
When John's disciples came, they carried off the body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.12Then John's disciples came and took the body and buried it and went and told Jesus.
When Jesus heard this, he left that place and went by boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of it and followed him on foot from the neighboring towns. 13Now when Jesus heard this he went away from there privately in a boat to an isolated place. But when the crowd heard about it, they followed him on foot from the towns.
When he got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He had compassion for them and healed their sick. 14As he got out he saw the large crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
When evening had come, the disciples went to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and it's already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."15When evening arrived, his disciples came to him saying, "This is an isolated place and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."
But Jesus told them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat."16But he replied, "They don't need to go. You give them something to eat."
They told him, "We don't have anything here except five loaves of bread and two fish."17They said to him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish."
He said, "Bring them to me." 18"Bring them here to me," he replied.
Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves in pieces and gave them to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 19Then he instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.
All of them ate and were filled. Then the disciples picked up what was left of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 20They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, twelve baskets full.
Now those who had eaten were about 5,000 men, besides women and children.21Not counting women and children, there were about five thousand men who ate.
Jesus immediately had the disciples get into a boat and cross to the other side ahead of him, while he sent the crowds away. 22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dispersed the crowds.
After dismissing the crowds, he went up on a hillside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone. 23And after he sent the crowds away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.
By this time the boat was in the middle of the sea and was being battered by the waves, because the wind was against them. 24Meanwhile the boat, already far from land, was taking a beating from the waves because the wind was against it.
Shortly before dawn, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. 25As the night was ending, Jesus came to them walking on the sea.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and cried out, "It's a ghost!" And they screamed in terror.26When the disciples saw him walking on the water they were terrified and said, "It's a ghost!" and cried out with fear.
"Have courage!" Jesus immediately told them. "It's me. Stop being afraid!"27But immediately Jesus spoke to them: "Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid."
Peter answered him, "Lord, if it's you, order me to come to you on the water."28Peter said to him, "Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water."
Jesus said, "Come on!" So Peter got down out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came to Jesus.29So he said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.
But when he noticed the strong wind, he was frightened. As he began to sink, he shouted, "Lord, save me!"30But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
At once Jesus reached out his hand, caught him, and asked him, "You who have so little faith, why did you doubt?" 31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"
As they got into the boat, the wind stopped blowing.32When they went up into the boat, the wind ceased.
Then the men in the boat began to worship Jesus, saying, "You certainly are the Son of God!"33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
They crossed over and came ashore at Gennesaret. 34After they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.
When the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word throughout that region and brought him everyone who was sick. 35When the people there recognized him, they sent word into all the surrounding area, and they brought all their sick to him.
They kept begging him to let them touch just the tassel of his garment, and everyone who touched it was completely healed.36They begged him if they could only touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
