1Then some Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked,

1Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,

2"Why do your disciples disregard the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands when they eat."

2"Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread."

3But he answered them, "Why do you also disregard the commandment of God because of your tradition?

3And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

4Because God said, 'You are to honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever curses father or mother must certainly be put to death.'

4"For God said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.'

5But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or his mother, "Whatever support you might have received from me has been given to God,"

5"But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother, "Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,"

6does not have to honor his father.' Because of your tradition, then, you have disregarded the authority of God's word.

6he is not to honor his father or his mother.' And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

7You hypocrites! How well did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said,

7"You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you:

8These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

8'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.

9Their worship of me is empty, because they teach human rules as doctrines.'"

9'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'"

10Then calling out to the crowd, he addressed them, "Listen and understand!

10After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, "Hear and understand.

11It is not what goes into the mouth that makes a person unclean. It is what comes out of the mouth that makes a person unclean."

11"It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man."

12Then the disciples came and asked him, "Do you realize that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?"

12Then the disciples came and said to Him, "Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?"

13He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be pulled up by the roots.

13But He answered and said, "Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be uprooted.

14Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If one blind person leads another blind person, both will fall into a ditch."

14"Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit."

15Then Peter told him, "Explain to us this parable."

15Peter said to Him, "Explain the parable to us."

16Jesus said, "Are you still so ignorant?

16Jesus said, "Are you still lacking in understanding also?

17Don't you know that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and then is expelled as waste?

17"Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated?

18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and it is those things that make a person unclean.

18"But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.

19It is out of the heart that evil thoughts come, as well as murder, adultery, sexual immorality, stealing, false testimony, and slander.

19"For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.

20These are the things that make a person unclean. But eating with unwashed hands doesn't make a person unclean."

20"These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man."

21Then Jesus left that place and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

21Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the district of Tyre and Sidon.

22Suddenly, a Canaanite woman from that territory came near and began to shout, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed!"

22And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed."

23But he didn't answer her at all. Then his disciples came up and kept urging him, "Send her away, because she keeps on screaming as she follows us."

23But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, "Send her away, because she keeps shouting at us."

24But he replied, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel."

24But He answered and said, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

25Then she came and fell down before him, saying, "Lord, help me!"

25But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, "Lord, help me!"

26He replied, "It's not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies."

26And He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."

27She said, "Yes, Lord. But even the puppies eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' tables."

27But she said, "Yes, Lord; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."

28Then Jesus answered her, "Lady, your faith is great! What you want is granted." That very hour her daughter was healed.

28Then Jesus said to her, "O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed at once.

29Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a hillside and sat down.

29Departing from there, Jesus went along by the Sea of Galilee, and having gone up on the mountain, He was sitting there.

30Large crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to talk, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he healed them.

30And large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them.

31As a result, the crowd was amazed to see those who were unable to talk speaking, the crippled healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. So they praised the God of Israel.

31So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

32Then Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion for the crowd because they have already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away without food, or they may faint on the road."

32And Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, "I feel compassion for the people, because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way."

33The disciples asked him, "Where in the wilderness are we to get enough bread to feed such a crowd?"

33The disciples said to Him, "Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?"

34Jesus asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have?" They said, "Seven, and a few small fish."

34And Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven, and a few small fish."

35Ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground,

35And He directed the people to sit down on the ground;

36he took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks. Then he broke them in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

36and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.

37All of them ate until they were filled, then the disciples picked up what was left of the broken pieces—seven baskets full.

37And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large baskets full.

38Now those who had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children.

38And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

39After he sent the crowds away, he got into a boat and went to the region of Magadan.

39And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into the boat and came to the region of Magadan.
