While they were speaking to the people, the priests, the commander of the Temple guards, and the Sadducees came to them. 1The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people.
They were greatly disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people and announcing that Jesus had been resurrected from the dead. 2They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
So they arrested them and placed them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening. 3They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day.
But many of those who heard their message believed, and the men grew to number about 5,000.4But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.
The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes met in Jerusalem 5The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem.
with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and the rest of the high priest's family. 6Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest's family.
They made Peter and John stand in front of them and began asking, "By what power or by what name did you do this?"7They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: "By what power or what name did you do this?"
Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, told them, "Rulers and elders of the people! 8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people!
If we are being questioned today for a good deed done for someone who was sick or to learn how this man was healed, 9If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed,
you and all the people of Israel must understand that this man stands healthy before you because of the name of Jesus from Nazareth, whom you crucified, but whom God raised from the dead. 10then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.
He is 'the stone that was rejected by you builders, which has become the cornerstone.' 11Jesus is "'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.'
There is no salvation by anyone else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved."12Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved."
Now when the Jewish leaders saw the boldness of Peter and John and found out that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and realized that they had been with Jesus. 13When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.
And seeing the man who was healed standing with them, they could not say anything against them. 14But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.
So they ordered them to leave the Council and began to discuss the matter among themselves. 15So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.
They said, "What should we do with these men? For it's obvious to everybody living in Jerusalem that an unmistakable sign has been done by them, and we cannot deny it. 16"What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it.
But to keep it from spreading any further among the people, let us warn them never again to speak to anyone in this name."17But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name."
So they called Peter and John back in and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 18Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John answered them, "You must decide whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than God, 19But Peter and John replied, "Which is right in God's eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!
for we cannot stop talking about what we've seen and heard."20As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."
So they threatened Peter and John even more and then let them go. They couldn't find any way to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened, 21After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened.
since the man on whom this sign of healing had been performed was more than 40 years old.22For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
After they were released, Peter and John went to their fellow believers and told them everything the high priests and the elders had said. 23On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
When they heard this, they all raised their voices to God and said, "Master, you made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. 24When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.
You said by the Holy Spirit through the voice of our ancestor, your servant David, 'Why do the unbelievers rage, and the people devise useless plots?25You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: "'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth take their stand, and rulers meet together against the Lord and against his Messiah.' 26The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one.'
For in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate actually met together with unbelievers and the people of Israel to oppose your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, 27Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.
to carry out everything that your hand and will had predetermined to take place. 28They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.
Lord, pay attention to their threats now, and allow your servants to speak your word boldly 29Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.
as you stretch out your hand to heal and to perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."30Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."
When they had prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken, and all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak messages from God boldly.31After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
Now all the believers were one in heart and soul, and nobody called any of his possessions his own. Instead, they shared everything they owned. 32All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.
With great power, the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was on them all, 33With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God's grace was so powerfully at work in them all
since none of them needed anything, because everyone who had land or houses would sell them and bring the money received for the things sold 34that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales
and lay it at the apostles' feet. Then it was distributed to anyone who needed it. 35and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
One man, Joseph, a descendant of Levi and a native of Cyprus, who was named Barnabas by the apostles (the name means "a son of encouragement"), 36Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means "son of encouragement"),
sold a field that belonged to him, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.37sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet.
