Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.1Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail over the misery to come upon you.
Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.2Your riches have rotted and moths have eaten your clothes.
Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.3Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days.
Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.4Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.5You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter.
Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.6You have condemned and murdered the righteous, who did not resist you.
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.7Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil—how patient he is for the fall and spring rains.
Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.8You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.
Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.9Do not complain about one another, brothers, so that you will not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing at the door!
Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.10Brothers, as an example of patience in affliction, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.11See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.12Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth or by any other oath. Simply let your “Yes” be yes, and your “No,” no, so that you will not fall under judgment.
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.13Is any one of you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises.
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.15And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.
Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.17Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.18Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth yielded its crops.
Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;19My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back,
Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.20consider this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
