Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. | 1So the heavens and the earth and everything in them were completed. |
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. | 2On the seventh day God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. |
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. | 3God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, for on it he rested from all his work of creation. |
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, | 4These are the records of the heavens and the earth, concerning their creation. At the time that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, |
And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. | 5no shrub of the field had yet grown on the land, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not made it rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground. |
But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. | 6But mist would come up from the earth and water all the ground. |
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. | 7Then the LORD God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being. |
And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. | 8The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he placed the man he had formed. |
And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. | 9The LORD God caused to grow out of the ground every tree pleasing in appearance and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden, as well as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. |
And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. | 10A river went out from Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became the source of four rivers. |
The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; | 11The name of the first is Pishon, which flows through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. |
And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. | 12Gold from that land is pure; bdellium and onyx are also there. |
And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. | 13The name of the second river is Gihon, which flows through the entire land of Cush. |
And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates. | 14The name of the third river is Tigris, which runs east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. |
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. | 15The LORD God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it. |
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: | 16And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, |
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. | 17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die." |
And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. | 18Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper corresponding to him." |
And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. | 19The LORD God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought each to the man to see what he would call it. And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. |
And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. | 20The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man no helper was found corresponding to him. |
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; | 21So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. |
And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. | 22Then the LORD God made the rib he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man. |
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. | 23And the man said: This one, at last, is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called "woman," for she was taken from man. |
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. | 24This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh. |
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. | 25Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame. |
