| 1Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: | 1From: Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus, the Messiah. To: Those who have received faith that is as valuable as ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus the Messiah. |
| 2Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, | 2May grace and peace be yours in abundance through full knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord! |
| 3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: | 3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the full knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. |
| 4Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. | 4Through these he has given us his precious and wonderful promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, seeing that you have escaped the corruption that is in the world caused by evil desires. |
| 5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; | 5For this very reason, you must make every effort to supplement your faith with moral character, your moral character with knowledge, |
| 6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; | 6your knowledge with self-control, your self-control with endurance, your endurance with godliness, |
| 7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. | 7your godliness with brotherly kindness, and your brotherly kindness with love. |
| 8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 8For if you possess these qualities, and if they continue to increase among you, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in attaining a full knowledge of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah. |
| 9But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. | 9For the person who lacks these qualities is blind and shortsighted, and has forgotten the cleansing that he has received from his past sins. |
| 10Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: | 10So then, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election certain, for if you keep on doing this you will never fail. |
| 11For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. | 11For in this way you will be generously granted entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus, the Messiah. |
| 12Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. | 12Therefore, I intend to keep on reminding you about these things, even though you already know them and are firmly established in the truth that you now have. |
| 13Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; | 13Yet I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I am living in this bodily tent, |
| 14Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. | 14because I know that the removal of my bodily tent will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, has shown me. |
| 15Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance. | 15And I will make every effort to see that you will always remember these things after I am gone. |
| 16For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. | 16When we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, we did not follow any clever myths. Rather, we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. |
| 17For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. | 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when these words from the Majestic Glory were spoken about him: "This is my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with him." |
| 18And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. | 18We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. |
| 19We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: | 19Therefore we regard the message of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp that is shining in a gloomy place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. |
| 20Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. | 20First of all, you must understand this: No prophecy in Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, |
| 21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. | 21because no prophecy ever originated through a human decision. Instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. |
