Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, | 1From: Paul, an apostle of the Messiah Jesus by God's will in keeping with the promise of life that is in the Messiah Jesus. |
To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. | 2To: Timothy, my dear child. May grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Messiah Jesus our Lord be yours! |
I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; | 3I constantly thank my God—whom I serve with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did—when I remember you in my prayers night and day, |
Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; | 4recalling your tears and longing to see you so that I can be filled with joy. |
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. | 5I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first existed in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that this faith also exists in you. |
Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. | 6For this reason, I am reminding you to fan into flames the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands. |
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. | 7For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but one of power, love, and self-discipline. |
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; | 8Therefore, never be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, his prisoner. Instead, by God's power, join me in suffering for the sake of the gospel. |
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, | 9He saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our own accomplishments, but according to his own purpose and the grace that was given to us in the Messiah Jesus before time began. |
But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: | 10Now, however, that grace has been revealed through the coming of our Savior the Messiah Jesus, who has destroyed death and through the gospel has brought life and release from death into full view. |
Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. | 11For the sake of this gospel I was appointed to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the gentiles. |
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. | 12That is why I suffer as I do. However, I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I'm convinced that he is able to protect what he has entrusted to me until the day that he comes. |
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. | 13Hold on to the pattern of healthy teachings that you have heard from me, along with the faith and love that are in the Messiah Jesus. |
That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. | 14With the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us, protect the good treasure that has been entrusted to you. |
This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. | 15You know that everyone in Asia has abandoned me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. |
The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: | 16May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, for he often took care of me and was not ashamed that I was a prisoner. |
But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. | 17Instead, when he arrived in Rome he searched diligently for me and found me. |
The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well. | 18May the Lord grant that he finds mercy on the day he comes again. You know very well how much he assisted me in Ephesus. |
