| 1And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. | 1Then Joseph embraced his father, cried over him, and kissed him. |
| 2And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. | 2After this, he issued orders to his physician servants to embalm his father. So they embalmed Israel. |
| 3And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days. | 3It took 40 days to complete the process, the normal period required for embalming. Meanwhile, the Egyptians mourned for him for 70 days. |
| 4And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, | 4At the conclusion of the mourning period, Joseph addressed Pharaoh's household. "If you're satisfied with me, would you please take this message to Pharaoh for me? Tell him, |
| 5My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. | 5My father told me, "Look! I'm about to die. Bury me in my grave that I dug for myself in the land of Canaan." So please let me travel to bury my father. I'll be right back.'" |
| 6And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear. | 6"Please go," Pharaoh replied. "Bury your father, as he asked you to do." |
| 7And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, | 7So Joseph got up and went to bury his father, accompanied by all of Pharaoh's servants, all of the elders of Egypt, |
| 8And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. | 8all of Joseph's household, his brothers, and his father's household. They left behind in the territory of Goshen only their youngest children, their flocks, and their herds. |
| 9And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company. | 9Chariots and horsemen also accompanied Joseph, so there were a lot of people. |
| 10And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days. | 10When they arrived at Atad's threshing floor, which is located beyond the Jordan River, they held a great and mournful memorial service, during which Joseph spent seven days mourning for his father. |
| 11And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan. | 11As soon as the Canaanites who lived in the land observed the mourning going on at Atad's threshing floor, they commented "This is a significant time of mourning for the Egyptians." That's why the place, which is located beyond the Jordan River, became known as Abel-mizraim. |
| 12And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them: | 12And so Israel's sons did what he had instructed them to do: |
| 13For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre. | 13they carried him to the territory of Canaan and buried him in the cave in Machpelah field near Mamre that Abraham had purchased as a cemetery from Ephron the Hittite. |
| 14And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. | 14After he had buried his father, Joseph and his brothers returned to Egypt, along with everyone who had gone with him to attend the burial. |
| 15And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. | 15Later, after Joseph's brothers faced the reality of their father's death, they asked themselves, "What happens if Joseph decides to hold a grudge against us? What if he pays us back in full for all the wrong things we did to him?" |
| 16And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying, | 16So they sent this message to Joseph: |
| 17So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him. | 17"Before he died, your father left some instructions. He told us, 'Tell Joseph, "Please forgive your brothers' offenses. I beg you, forgive their sins, because they wronged you."' So please forgive the transgression of the servants of your father's God." Joseph wept when they talked to him. |
| 18And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants. | 18So Joseph's brothers went to visit him, fell prostrate in front of him, and declared, "Look! We're your servants." |
| 19And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? | 19"Don't be afraid," Joseph responded. "Am I sitting in God's place? |
| 20But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. | 20As far as you're concerned, you were planning evil against me, but God intended it for good, planning to bring about the present result so that many people would be preserved alive. |
| 21Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them. | 21So don't be afraid! I'll take care of you and your little ones." So Joseph kept on comforting them, speaking to the needs of their hearts. |
| 22And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years. | 22Joseph continued to live in Egypt, along with his father's household, until he was 110 years old. |
| 23And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees. | 23Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's children, as well as the children who had been born to Manasseh's son Machir, whom he adopted as his own. |
| 24And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. | 24Later, Joseph told his brothers, "I'm going to die soon, but God will certainly provide for you and bring you up from this land to the land that he promised with an oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." |
| 25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. | 25So Joseph made all of Israel's other children make this promise: "Because God is certainly going to take care of you, you are to carry my bones up from here." |
| 26So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. | 26Some time later, Joseph died at the age of 110 years, and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt. |
