A Song of degrees of David. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say; | 1A song of ascents, by David. "If the LORD had not been on our side"--let Israel say this!-- |
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us: | 2if the LORD had not been on our side, when men attacked us, |
Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: | 3they would have swallowed us alive, when their anger raged against us. |
Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: | 4The water would have overpowered us; the current would have overwhelmed us. |
Then the proud waters had gone over our soul. | 5The raging water would have overwhelmed us. |
Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. | 6The LORD deserves praise, for he did not hand us over as prey to their teeth. |
Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. | 7We escaped with our lives, like a bird from a hunter's snare. The snare broke, and we escaped. |
Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth. | 8Our deliverer is the LORD, the Creator of heaven and earth. |
