King James BibleNew International Version
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.1The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions.
And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;2One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.
And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;3The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the LORD, where the ark of God was.
That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.4Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, "Here I am."
And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.5And he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So he went and lay down.
And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.6Again the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." "My son," Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down."
Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.7Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.
And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.8A third time the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy.
Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.9So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.10The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.11And the LORD said to Samuel: "See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.
In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.12At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family--from beginning to end.
For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.13For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them.
And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.14Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, 'The guilt of Eli's house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.'"
And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.15Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision,
Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.16but Eli called him and said, "Samuel, my son." Samuel answered, "Here I am."
And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.17"What was it he said to you?" Eli asked. "Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you."
And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.18So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, "He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes."
And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.19The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel's words fall to the ground.
And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.20And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD.
And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.21The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.
