King James Bible | New International Version |
To the chief Musician, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech. Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually. | 1For the director of music. A maskil of David. When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: "David has gone to the house of Ahimelek." Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God? |
Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp rasor, working deceitfully. | 2You who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor. |
Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. | 3You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth. |
Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue. | 4You love every harmful word, you deceitful tongue! |
God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah. | 5Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin: He will snatch you up and pluck you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. |
The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him: | 6The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you, saying, |
Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. | 7"Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!" |
But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. | 8But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever. |
I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints. | 9For what you have done I will always praise you in the presence of your faithful people. And I will hope in your name, for your name is good. |
