King James Bible | New Living Translation |
Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. | 1“Listen to me, O family of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and born into the family of Judah. Listen, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and call on the God of Israel. You don’t keep your promises, |
For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is his name. | 2even though you call yourself the holy city and talk about depending on the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. |
I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass. | 3Long ago I told you what was going to happen. Then suddenly I took action, and all my predictions came true. |
Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass; | 4For I know how stubborn and obstinate you are. Your necks are as unbending as iron. Your heads are as hard as bronze. |
I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them. | 5That is why I told you what would happen; I told you beforehand what I was going to do. Then you could never say, ‘My idols did it. My wooden image and metal god commanded it to happen!’ |
Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them. | 6You have heard my predictions and seen them fulfilled, but you refuse to admit it. Now I will tell you new things, secrets you have not yet heard. |
They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. | 7They are brand new, not things from the past. So you cannot say, ‘We knew that all the time!’ |
Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb. | 8“Yes, I will tell you of things that are entirely new, things you never heard of before. For I know so well what traitors you are. You have been rebels from birth. |
For my name's sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. | 9Yet for my own sake and for the honor of my name, I will hold back my anger and not wipe you out. |
Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. | 10I have refined you, but not as silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering. |
For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another. | 11I will rescue you for my sake— yes, for my own sake! I will not let my reputation be tarnished, and I will not share my glory with idols! Freedom from Babylon |
Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. | 12“Listen to me, O family of Jacob, Israel my chosen one! I alone am God, the First and the Last. |
Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together. | 13It was my hand that laid the foundations of the earth, my right hand that spread out the heavens above. When I call out the stars, they all appear in order.” |
All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? The LORD hath loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans. | 14Have any of your idols ever told you this? Come, all of you, and listen: The LORD has chosen Cyrus as his ally. He will use him to put an end to the empire of Babylon and to destroy the Babylonian armies. |
I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous. | 15“I have said it: I am calling Cyrus! I will send him on this errand and will help him succeed. |
Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me. | 16Come closer, and listen to this. From the beginning I have told you plainly what would happen.” And now the Sovereign LORD and his Spirit have sent me with this message. |
Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. | 17This is what the LORD says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow. |
O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea: | 18Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea. |
Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me. | 19Your descendants would have been like the sands along the seashore— too many to count! There would have been no need for your destruction, or for cutting off your family name.” |
Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye, The LORD hath redeemed his servant Jacob. | 20Yet even now, be free from your captivity! Leave Babylon and the Babylonians. Sing out this message! Shout it to the ends of the earth! The LORD has redeemed his servants, the people of Israel. |
And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: he clave the rock also, and the waters gushed out. | 21They were not thirsty when he led them through the desert. He divided the rock, and water gushed out for them to drink. |
There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked. | 22“But there is no peace for the wicked,” says the LORD. |
