| 1Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. | 1One day the members of the heavenly court came again to present themselves before the LORD, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them. |
| 2And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. | 2“Where have you come from?” the LORD asked Satan. Satan answered the LORD, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.” |
| 3And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. | 3Then the LORD asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil. And he has maintained his integrity, even though you urged me to harm him without cause.” |
| 4And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. | 4Satan replied to the LORD, “Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life. |
| 5But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. | 5But reach out and take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!” |
| 6And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. | 6“All right, do with him as you please,” the LORD said to Satan. “But spare his life.” |
| 7So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. | 7So Satan left the LORD’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot. |
| 8And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes. | 8Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery as he sat among the ashes. |
| 9Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die. | 9His wife said to him, “Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.” |
| 10But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips. | 10But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong. Job’s Three Friends Share His Anguish |
| 11Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. | 11When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. Their names were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. |
| 12And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. | 12When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief. |
| 13So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great. | 13Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words. |
