Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars; | 1Wisdom has built her house; she has carved out her seven pillars. |
She has prepared her food, she has mixed her wine; She has also set her table; | 2She has prepared her meat; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. |
She has sent out her maidens, she calls From the tops of the heights of the city: | 3She has sent out her female servants; she calls out from the highest points of the city: |
"Whoever is naive, let him turn in here!" To him who lacks understanding she says, | 4"Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!" To the one who lacks sense, she says, |
"Come, eat of my food And drink of the wine I have mixed. | 5"Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine I have mixed. |
"Forsake your folly and live, And proceed in the way of understanding." | 6Leave inexperience behind, and you will live; pursue the way of understanding. |
He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself, And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself. | 7The one who corrects a mocker will bring abuse on himself; the one who rebukes the wicked will get hurt. |
Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you. | 8Don't rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you; rebuke the wise, and he will love you. |
Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser, Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning. | 9Instruct the wise, and he will be wiser still; teach the righteous, and he will learn more. |
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. | 10"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. |
For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. | 11For by me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. |
If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you alone will bear it. | 12If you are wise, you are wise for your own benefit; if you mock, you alone will bear the consequences." |
The woman of folly is boisterous, She is naive and knows nothing. | 13Folly is a rowdy woman; she is gullible and knows nothing. |
She sits at the doorway of her house, On a seat by the high places of the city, | 14She sits by the doorway of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, |
Calling to those who pass by, Who are making their paths straight: | 15calling to those who pass by, who go straight ahead on their paths: |
"Whoever is naive, let him turn in here," And to him who lacks understanding she says, | 16"Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!" To the one who lacks sense, she says, |
"Stolen water is sweet; And bread eaten in secret is pleasant." | 17"Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten secretly is tasty!" |
But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of Sheol. | 18But he doesn't know that the departed spirits are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol. |
